Elite: Dangerous expands its ‘Horizons’ next week

Elite: Dangerous is about to get a lot bigger with the launch of Horizons next Tuesday. Frontier‘s David Braben announced the date on the official game forums earlier today:

We have worked very hard to ensure forward & backward compatibility so that all players of both seasons can play in the same galaxy together. After every Elite Dangerous release we have taken care to listen and reacted to all feedback, and Elite Dangerous: Horizons will follow exactly the same process. Included with Horizons will be multiple expansions of which Planetary Landings will be the first. All going well, we plan to launch Horizons with Planetary Landings on Tuesday (15th December – you heard it here first!). This will initially be termed an ‘Early Access’ release to highlight our normal process to our broad audience, some of whom have been with us since the start, but many have joined our community very recently.

The fifth round of beta is on the way tomorrow. We’ve included the new planetary landing gameplay trailer below.

chriskovo GoJammit So, you’re wanting the ship to pilot itself by default…and then only get involved when there’s a problem?  Seriously?
Even Freelancer didn’t do that.
There’s one game that springs to mind that does that:  Eve Online.  But that isn’t a “sim”.

PhoenixDfire rioinsignia Thanks for the warning, but to be honest the “buggies” thing is a gimmick to me.  it appears (to me) to be nothing more than a shallow land based arena mode.  I could be wrong in that assumption, but there you go.
I know that they are planning on putting in multi-crew stuff.  But, given that they’ve yet to allow player pilots to get out of their seats, and the fact that going from your ship to the buggy is a “fade to black” situation, I’m not holding out much hope that the “multi-crew” aspect will leave a lot to be desired.
As for the exclusive ship, I can live without it.  I can enjoy the splendour of game without it.  And the discount?  I’m against the notion of having to pay that much for an expansion that, right now, I perceive to give very little of interest to me.
But, as more is released, maybe later on I’ll be more inclined to purchase it.

The only part of that I will agree with is the sun thing, there is no reason you should have to come in directly at the sun with five seconds to turn or die. The rest of it though, no. Select your destination, turn your ship, done.

GoJammit  Jumping-FTL whatever it is.  I should be able just point out a system I want to goto and have the auto pilot kick in. I can take over whenever if their is trouble but it should just be automated and not automatically driving you into the sun when you jump into a new system.

An auto pilot for jumping? You mean when you turn your ship in the direction you want to go and then it the jump button? Of all the faults you could level against Elite that die damn sure isn’t one of them. Maybe an auto pilot for coming out out of FTL to a station or planet. That can be frustrating for some. Unnecessarily so. But if you can’t even be bothered to point your own ship, then you come of just sounding lazy.

rioinsignia Serrenity  Sorry that’s bs.  They were just to lazy to do an initial setup of a few missions that give your some money and some decent first upgrades? Even EVE does that!   Its fine that its a sandbox but the game experience  should be tailored to the needs and ease of use of the player.  Its a game for gods sake not a new job.  Def needs an auto pilot feature too when jumping it gets old fast.

rioinsignia well, just a word of warning, there will probably not be much more content for the ship side of things over the next six months or so, they’ll be focusing on new buggies and planetary stuff next.

I think if you haven’t order the expansion, then you’ve missed the 25% discount and the exclusive ship.

Right now, given the content that is coming in the short term, I’m personally finding it hard to justify the cost of the expansion to myself on top of the price I paid previously for ED. So I guess I’ll wait until later in the “season” and consider it again if we see more content that I personally feel is interesting.
