World of Warcraft’s lore book previews the cosmology around Azeroth

This is both awesome and an illustration of what's wrong.

If you’ve never cared about the lore behind World of Warcraft, the hardcover Warcraft Chronicles book releasing on March 15th is unlikely to change your mind, due in no small part to the fact that you likely won’t buy it. It would make an odd purchase for someone who didn’t care. On the other hand, if you can’t wait to get a more thorough explanation of the fundamental cosmology behind the earliest portions of Azeroth’s history… well, actually, you don’t have to wait until the book’s release for that.

Dark Horse Comics has released a 21-page preview of the book, free for anyone to download with no DRM prior to the book’s full release. It covers the formation of Azeroth, the creation of the Aspects, and the early stages of the Zandalari empire in brief, with several bit of artwork to flesh out the history. If you’re curious about the book but still on the fence, it’s a good idea to download the preview and decide for yourself if you’d like this sitting on your bookshelf.

Always wanted to read the whole backstory in one place.

Only annoying thing about the book so far is the lower case v. It is Visually distracting to see eVery one larger than all the other letters. It diVerts my attention. ProVokes a nerVous feeling in my brain that sends shiVers done my Vertebrae.

Hey, look! Emerald Dream has not been scrapped entirely, yet! This could be a huge spoiler at a future expansion about ED. *cries in corner, because it won’t happen anyway*

Anyway, Ed would have been interesting in vanilla/TBC era, but not in the current watered-down Farmville simulator (everything after Ulduar).

Nyres Man, if i lived my life basing my entertainment on whether or not what I did would be relevant two years from now I’d probably just sit and stare at a wall for most of my free time…I can only assume that’s what you do.

Morningrise Lord Zorvan Eh, I’d say the “pretty consistent” puts them around 75% consistent with their lore…
Honestly, most of my issue isn’t that things get changed, it’s the lack of nuance when doing it, as they tend to make changes with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer. To me, that indicates that such changes are often last minute or “we thought this was cooler, so scrapped the older lore” or “well we really want to do this new thing, so let’s throw in new lore to make it work” and end up missing the parts where it doesn’t fit as well or contradicts.

Compare that to a story, even in an MMO, that brings more information and thus the characters (and by extension, yours) understanding of the lore of that particular world at a measured and controlled pace, which generally means taking a longer view of the story.

I have a lot of respect for those that can do it that way, and there are some places where you can see where Blizz managed it…but those are then hampered in the numerous other ways that they didn’t plan ahead as well.

Morningrise Lord Zorvan As a drawyer ( and someone who has a universe written somewhere in my pc ), is pathetic when people clings to the lore excuses when the OWN CREATORS change it. It’s their game, their writing, their decision.
And Blizz with the class reworks proved they care about the lore. It’s the direction that changed too much.

I don’t see the point in getting it as most of this stuff in the book will be retconned in the year or two to fit whatever their whims are rather than keeping a structured and consistent story and lore background.  Also we don’t even know how accurate this will be.  Thier ultimate visual guide a few years ago had errors and wrong information by the time it was released.

Lord Zorvan Cash cow? I guess let’s ignore the fact we just looked at the official book digitally 100% free with no “DRM”.
