Sandbox Ascent: The Space Game’s new patch adds co-op combat, overhauled UI

Indie space sandbox MMORPG Ascent: The Space Game scored a “massive” update yesterday, so big the studio has nicknamed it the HyperMegaUltra update. “So many bugs have been fixed it’s ridiculous,” one-man dev team Fluffy Kitten Studios writes.

As far as content, the headliner is the addition of co-op combat — gather up some friends and go gank some pirate NPCs. There’s also a new single-player campaign quest line and a new ship. On the crafting end, there are now new forms of mining, new asteroid and metal types, and new modular buildable palaces for colonies.

Grumpy about the graphics? That’s still a work in progress; Fluffy Kitten notes that in this patch, it upgraded to Unity 5 for a “huge graphics boost” as well as “replaced almost every interface in the game with new UI by an industry professional. Less clunk, more wow!”

Checked it out last night. A couple of windows still use the old UI, I guess, and the difference is stark. The new UI is pretty, functional, and it scales up well to high resolutions. Awesome.

The UI… it is sooo much better than the old one. There are a few remaining windows I ran into that don’t follow the hot new look and function, but this is a big deal for new players to the game.

I have a soft spot for one-man studios.  It’s why i’m addicted to Stardew Valley right now.  Keeping my eyes on this one; glad to see major progress like this being made!

I’ve been wondering why this game was so quiet on the news front recently. I guess it’s because they’ve been busy with this update.

With a new UI in place, maybe it’s time I finally bought a copy and checked it out.
