EVE Online’s newest ships look like cel-shaded beauties

The Triglavians are coming! The Triglavians are coming! OK, we’ll admit that that catchphrase needs some work, but nevertheless, EVE Online players should get excited about this precursor faction that considerately left much of its technology and ships behind in Abyssal Deadspace.

Abyssal Deadspace are dangerous, time-limited solo instances that EVE players will be exploring when the Into the Abyss expansion arrives on May 29th. CCP showed off a trio of Triglavian ships that players can discover or build for their own, including the Damavik Frigate, the Vedmak Cruiser, and the Leshak Battleship.

“We expect Triglavian ships to be especially powerful in environments where targets go down slowly,” CCP said. “This includes small gang, factional warfare, and especially wormhole engagements. We also expect to be surprised with player innovation, as always, and to make sure those surprises don’t get out of hand, we’ve already set aside time to make follow-up balance adjustments shortly after release.”

First thing I thought on seeing the ship pictured…Finally! EVE has discovered symmetry lol

As appealing as symmetry may be, i find EVE ships to be some of the best designed sci-fi models in majority of space games. Whenever i think of dystopian future and space travel, EVE-style of ships is what comes to my mind. E:D seem too simplistic, and SC seem too airplane-like. Somehow EVE hits that right spot for me.

I wonder if its a change in art direction to try and lure in new players to top off user numbers and avoid player number decline? god knows even the first hour is a horrid experience for a new player but a shiny cosmetic will lure in people even if they feel the game is trash. Its basically how all gacha games work.

I’m surprised this game is still making money. Surely it has to be on life support now.

Believe it or not, it’s still kicking around. The game is definitely on a the decline to it’s demise and has been for many years now, but it’s a very slow and steady decline in players, it will still likely be another 3 years or so till it finally is shuttered by my “rough” estimate. (Based on how many players it loses each year.)

Slow decline? When I played years ago they broke all sorts of concurrency records for having 25k then 30k players connected to the same server when the competitors couldn’t even manage 5k without noticeable lag. The fact that, 10+ years later with me logging in every so often to spin around on the station and spend money I’m not earning back, and they are still maintaining 30k on their server is impressive in my book.

I’ve never understood the mentality of “grow or die”. It’s possible to, in a business, reach a point where your profitability is where you want it and your ability to provide customer service isn’t hampered by your size. Its possible CCP knows which side their bread is buttered on and is happy with it.

How are you going to progress without growth? At one point I remember CCP boasted that they had the latest servers in the world, most complex tech that even Blizzard didn’t have for WoW. Of course that was way back when. A bunch of years had passed, CCP is still a small company in Iceland, and EVE is a bit smaller in customer base. You have to make enough money to pay for the game, pay for the devs and to fund new projects, perhaps a new EVE. Not sure what they’re doing after so many of their FPS projects have failed. We’ll see I suppose.

Hmm, wouldn’t “cel-shaded beauties” look out of place in a game where the rest of the ships are of a realistic looking graphic design?

I can’t read “Triglavian” without hearing Miracle Max from Princess Bride. “He distinctly said ‘tri glave.'”

So, (If I read the Blog right) – they reorder the options on the Colony Management menu (aka Spreadsheet ;) ). They should just convert their backend to use MS Excel and be done with it.

Are your saying that playing EVE is just like using spreadsheets? Oh. My. God. That is soooo funny. I never heard that before. You are truly hilarious.
