New World alpha leak video highlights the map, action combat, and dizzying UI

As Amazon Game Studios continues dispatching new alpha invites for its upcoming survival sandbox MMORPG New World, it’s casting a huge net – and courting the predictable leakers, despite its strict NDA, which forbids the invitee from even admitting that he or she is an invitee.

Case in point: Somebody dumped a ton of footage of the game on PornHub (whee), allowing YouTubers a go at the exhaustive play-by-play. One such channel, Less than Epic, has done just that, breaking down the leak.

MMORPG fans are going to be pleased with the focus on crafting as well as that gorgeous map, but maybe less so with the emphasis on survival game mechanics and action combat. I’m not a huge fan of the Skyrim-esque UI for an MMO myself. As PC Gamer notes, structure building isn’t included in the footage, nor are guilds. Spoil yourself below.

The game isn’t an MMORPG, I don’t know why anyone would call it one. It’s a better version of Rust mixed in with a little Conan Exiles. It’s absolutely not going to satisfy people who are looking for an actual MMO replacement, but it is already better than most of the survival games out there and it’s only in Alpha.

I think the game will be a big hit when it finally releases, and that 95% of the negative attention it gets will be because of people misrepresenting what kind of game it actually is. If you go into it knowing it’s a survival game you’ll be happy, if you go into it thinking it’s your WoW (or whatever) replacement you will sorely disappointed.

I’m pretty bummed, because I actually thought it was an actual MMO.

Not worried about NDA already uninstalled and don’t expect to be going back any time soon.

Baring in mind alpha and all that but at the moment its just a survival gank box with all the usual stuff pick up rocks, chop trees, hope you dont get ganked and then watch a bar go across the screen for crafting. Well not actually go across the screes it goes in a circle so really pushing crafting into the future right there.

As others have said below what was represented in the brief video teasers in terms of looks is a long way from how is actually looks in game at this point in time. Will it get better I would imagine so but as of now its functional at best.

I expect this will do quite well as there is certainly an audience for this sort of thing but I am not part of that audience. I will keep an eye on it as it goes forward but right now this is not a game I want to play any further.

Yeah, didn’t impress me at all, but that’s partially because survival games are not really my cup of tea. However, i was interested in seeing what Amazon was capable of doing and they sent me the invite. The crafting looks interesting for people who like that kind of thing. I wasn’t overly impressed with the graphics (am sure they will get better (i expected more from a game built on an engine based on cryengine – i am sure they will get better) at this point but the at least the animations and movement felt smooth, so they have that going for them…which is nice.

well, the age of theme parks has come to an end.

Age of theme parks ending? no. That implies they are going away. I do think we are seeing a rise in the Sandbox as people who grew up playing sandbox survival games are looking for larger social experiences. It’s just going to take someone funding a solid sandbox mmo, and to finding a way to monetize it, since subscriptions are a hard sell in modern world.

The graphics arent anywhere as nice as the teasers they have been posting the last couple months. There is an exceptional amount of blurriness, over abundance of fog, glowy effects, sparkly bs, and pop-in.

My hopes for this game to be an mmorpg (Ie: Everquest style) are gone.

This game is basically a reskinned, retooled Conan Exiles game.

Which is fine, I just wish they had been more open and informative about that fact when they were hyping the game.

Seems like a dumped down, gang version of eso…

Meh…I mean, it’s pretty and I wish there were more new MMOs out there, but the action combat and that awful compass thing rather than a minimap (which is probably the main reason why I can’t force myself to play ESO for any length of time) are a bit underwhelming. And the gankbox emphasis? Ugh. It’s a shame.

I agree. This is not a game for the directionally challenged (like me). The action combat is very reminiscent of basic unmoded Skyrim.

And the PvP emphasis… while some like it, it strikes me as lazy development, as in, “We don’t need content! Players can cannibalize each other for entertainment!”

ESO has an addon that changes the compass to a mini-map I believe.

It has multiple minimap options as a matter of fact.

So lack of a mini map is holding you back from playing ESO, there’s this nifty thing called addons which among many other things offer up a few different minimal options.

My point was that for me personally it is a crappy design choice. I did play with a minimap addon, actually, and that was just one of the many things that irked me about ESO (not to piss in anyone’s cornflakes or anything). I disliked the fact that I had to mod the crap out of it just to have a normal level of QoL options. Not my cup of tea. :)

Yeah, that… looks like nothing all that new for gaming, but MMOs do tend to lag behind by years in most cases. So that makes it an interesting question on whether that’s the entire map area, or what, and just how far that crafting may go (what is shown is pretty much standard survival sandbox).

I got an invite, and hopped in for about 30 mins. Not going to say much because of NDA, but for anyone fearing that it’s little more than a Ark/Rust/DayZ clone with slightly more controlled open PvP… your fears are justified.

I can confirm this.

After playing Conan Exiles… I cant say I ever once thought “I really hope some big company makes a game just like this but in a different era/setting”

This is a confirmation of your confirmation. :P I gave it a try, spent ~1-2 hrs in it and did not enjoy the gankfesting in it. Just not my cup of tea. Any of you who like it, good for you LOL.

As an addendum to my comment, it’s really disappointing to see this as the result of four plus years of work. You say “alpha test” all you want, but the fact is the game isn’t likely to undergo a fundamental transformation into something other than clone of every other early access survival sandbox out there with a completely different game play loop.
