NantG says it’s handing Z1 Battle Royale back to Daybreak – it’s not sunsetting, but there were layoffs

I HAVE COME AFLAME

Yesterday, we broke the news that Z1 Battle Royale looked to be in serious trouble based on developers stating publicly that they’d been laid off from the title. Now, we have a better picture about what’s going on thanks to NantG’s statement. Bizarrely, it’s not all bad news, and the PC version of H1Z1 isn’t completely hosed – it’s just going back to Daybreak.

“Despite the team’s determination and commitment to revive Z1BR’s player base with our recent Season 3 launch update, we soon realized that the road is still paved with many challenges that preclude us from long-term success, including the confusion it caused by having both NantG Mobile and Daybreak managing the same game under two separate brands. Based on these events and the current state of the game, NantG Mobile will focus on its core mission of developing mobile games moving forward, and we have refocused our team toward this vision. We have also decided to hand back the Z1BR torch to Daybreak Games, so that both Z1BR and H1Z1 will be under one publishing umbrella once again. Daybreak Games has agreed to keep the servers up for players and continue live maintenance on the game.”

The company does not acknowledge the layoffs outside of that one line – “refocused our team toward this vision.”

NantG says that it’ll be working with Daybreak on the transition and doesn’t anticipate downtime. Do note that the companies don’t make clear the state of the supposedly ongoing negotiations surrounding Just Survive.

I am still looking forward to the full shutdown news. Didn’t I predict summer? August to be specific. Looking right on target.

It’s completely hosed.

B.t.w, for anyone interested here is the whole response by the Lead Designer of H1Z1 series who got fired yesterday:
http://www.twitlonger.com/show/n_1sqrrj4

Pretty nice of him to mention all the people who influenced his work and work of his team, from coworkers to people like Playerunknown (who created BR mod for Arma back in 2013) to streamers like Lirik (who was the major reason BR became popular on Twitch way before Fortnite and players like Ninja or DrDisrespect).

But the Planetside Asset Flip Arena will surely be the Battle Royale that succeeds right? How do you have one struggling battle royale and think yet another one will do better?

So…EVEN more layoffs incoming at Daybreak Games in a month or two, in conjunction with a full Sunset announcement.

Got it.

Soon-Shiong: “Yo, Epstein, got a second?”

Epstein: “Sup Bro…”

Soon-Shiong: “I’m looking at our contract, specifically the part where it talks about you having to buy back the P.C. games if they turn out to be crap.”

Epstein “C’mon, man. Those properties were awesome, what did you do to them?”

Soon-Shiong: ” Yeah, whatever. Get your check book.”

Epstein: “Well, shit.”

Soon-Shiong: “Oh, by the way. We’re gonna need to put some distance between the Daybreak brand and our own. It’s, ahh, confusing people, and we want our venture to be successful.”

Epstein: “What do you mean by that?”

Bree’s irrational optimism is one of her many charming attributes; for me, I do not see that a big of a distinction between ” completely hosed” and “going back to Daybreak.” :-)

City of Heroes went to live on a farm upstate somewhere.

Does that statement on Steam mean we might still get the EverQuest Immortal mobile title?

Makes you wonder what the entire point was.

I suppose the main question is, will the game get another renaming now?

The point seemed to be based on a sucker willing to pay Daybreak some money to get in on their hot battle royale property. A fool and his money are soon parted.

More like, you rent a new space heater believing it will keep your room nice and warm, then realize it is more likely to burn your house down, so pay the store to please take it back NOW!

There is no point of renaming it anymore since it is clearly going into “maintenance mode” ;-)
