Warframe releases the Hallowed Flame Halloween fight and Nightwave Intermission II, delays The Old Blood

Digital Extremes has treated us to another gaggle of news for the multiplayer sci-fantasy shooter thing, with details on a Halloween Tactical Alert, the next Nightwave step, and a delay for The Old Blood update.

All platform players will get to fight to survive the night in the Hallowed Flame Tactical Alert, which will strike familiar to those who fought Zealoids in Nightwave: The Emissary. In short, players need to kill the Zealoid to obtain a lantern, keep it charged by killing enemies for the required length of time, and extract successfully. Completing the three missions will net you an Orokin Catalyst, Forma, and Aura Forma, while clearing the encounter with a score of 900 in 15 minutes will reward the Naberus Ephemera aura that surrounds your avatar with batss and a Stratos Emblem.

All platforms are also getting the second Intermission for Nightwave, which lets players earn a number of rewards from Intermission I and Series 1. There are 30 ranks of rewards waiting to be collected as well as items from Nora’s Offerings, but this will only run for a limited time.

Finally, the devs held a livestream that confirmed a delay for The Old Blood’s release into next week, showed off the Kuva Lich system, and also discussed changes to the Catchmoon pistol. According to a paraphrased statement from our tipster, “When a game has over 100 secondary weapons and high level players use a single one of them over 50% of the time you know its balance is out of line.” You can check out that stream on Twitch or Mixer.

Just to clarify, they said it was delayed to “next week” at the end of last week so it should be showing up this week! ~touch wood~

The new Hallowe’en event is spooky and a lot of fun, tried it solo and found the first mission easy enough but had trouble getting enough enemy spawns in the second mission so PUGged it from then on, had one derpy group but the rest were great! In the later missions it became clear that trying to find the caches rather than just concentrating on staying together and keeping the lantern going was a temptation that led to failure… got all 3 caches in the second mission and they just contained a bit of kuva and endo.

Catchmoon has been my go-to gun for the past year, but it is hugely overpowered – with a Riven and some Primed mods mine is doing ~21k base damage with over 100% crit chance and a 4.8 crit multiplier for over 100k damage per shot and can take down high level Grineer dropships in the Plains with 2 or 3 hits. Was interesting seeing the weapon usage spreadsheet on stream, and looks like they plan to leave the damage about the same but drastically reduce the range and increase the damage fall-off.

They also mentioned that it’ll cost a bunch of Vitus Essence to buy the keys for the missions to get Grendel’s parts, but you won’t lose a key if you fail a mission.

I tripped over two of the caches so far. Mostly the same random junk as any other cache, but one also had an Infested Ancient Specter blueprint, so that was kind of nice. I assume anything other than tiny amounts of credits or the resources the Infested drop constantly anyway is pretty rare though.

*Edit* At this point, it won’t surprise me if they delay it yet again. DE seem to have completely lost the ability to estimate how long it will take them to finish anything. :( Either that or they’re doing a reverse Mr. Scott, and even the roughest estimate they make (New War by the end of the year from four months ago) should be multiplied by at least a factor of four to get the actual time. :(

New event can be a bit of a challenge. Half the PUGs I group up with derp out fast when they all spread thin and draw aggro away from the lantern. But the event style is actually pretty fun — way better than the old Halloween event.

That Juggernaut was pretty obnoxious, yeah.

Not only was it horrible to fight, I also don’t remember any lore explanation for why our ‘frames lost their abilities and stats while facing it (except Khora’s kavat was overlooked, which I may have taken advantage of). Whereas this year fits quite well into current events!

To be fair, holiday event missions usually have a tenuous connection to lore at the best of times. I don’t think the mission is really considered “canon” at all, it’s just a thing you can do.

It’s kind of interesting how the Prelate has changed tone since the Derelict mission. From “Welcome! You… are… welcome!” to “Imposter!” I do hope that at least three avatars of the Infestation having some kind of personality (Kenga, Arlo and the Prelates) means there’s a chance that we’ll get Infested Kuva Liches at some point.

I’d honestly prefer to see new Infested types over Moar Grineer and Even More Corpus. Especially Corpus, since DE doesn’t seem to be able to come up with a gimmick for them other than “moar knockback” and “nullify all the powers.” :(

I think DE did say we’ll be getting Corpus Liches next and Infested Liches later. I’m curious what the lore justification will be, if all Liches involve Kuva – Corpus stealing Kuva from the Grineer to experiment with it, then Grineer and Corpus Liches succumbing to the Infestation?

And there’s definitely precedent for Infested with personality, both Phorid (“Revoke the frailties of flesh. Let us in.”) and Lephantis (“We embrace you. Why do you defile us?”) get voice lines.
