Wheeee Phantasy Star Online 2 is now accepting closed beta signups in North America

There are a few, uh, provisos, ah, a couple of quid pro quos...

One of the big surprises of 2019 – and also one of the most welcome ones – was the revelation that Phantasy Star Online 2 is finally, finally coming westward next year. Cue absolute pandemonium as everyone freaked out, given that we’ve been waiting for this game for nearly eight years and most everyone outside of Japan had long since given up on it.

Anyhow, as of today you can finally stake your claim on the game, or at least in its closed beta, and as long as you live in North America and have an Xbox One, as signups are now live. “You can register for early sign-up on Windows 10, but the Closed Beta is exclusive to Xbox One,” Microsoft and Sega say.

“Phantasy Star Online 2 (PSO2), one of Japan’s biggest online RPGs, is coming soon to users in North America on Xbox One. Beginning today, players in the United States and Canada can sign up for the Closed Beta Test through the Xbox Insider Program to secure a spot and receive special rewards! In Phantasy Star Online 2, you are a member of ARKS, a task force dedicated to exploring numerous planets and protecting the universe against a malignant force called the Falspawn. Embark on a never-ending assortment of missions with fellow operatives and experience unparalleled action RPG combat, completely free to play.”

Check out the post for the complete rundown on how to actually sign up through the Xbox Insider hub.

I’ve heard people rave about the game for years but the screenshots indicate an art style I’m not overly fond of. Still, I may give it a try if it ever does get off the ground in NA.

I am genuinely excited for this release. It’s been too long in coming!

I just hope the PC port is done right since that’s the platform I’m going to need to run it on.

Phantasy Star Universe did pretty good on Xbox 360 I remember so im not surprised its coming out on a MS console again first.

Hopefully it isn’t too long until other regions are made available, I wanna’ jump in as soon as I can.

I’m not a boring Xbox-hater, so I’m more than happy to play on the console, just need those global/regional unlock.

I was hyped for this but not now. If this is going to be all about Xbox and a bad PC port. So sick of bad PC ports from Xbox. I can see Microsoft screwing this up badly. This is a PC game but Microsoft will make it all about Xbox and to hell with the PC gamer. Microsoft has a bottomless wallet to do what they want.

Microsoft isn’t doing the port, SEGA is. Microsoft might have paid for it to happen, but the development is done by SEGA, they’ll do the Xbox port and the western release in general, although hosted on Azure.
Although I must admit I haven’t thought about how it’ll login.

It looks like it’s about as XBox Exclusive as Sea of Thieves – So, not very? So that’s good!

For now Microsoft is putting all their games on PC and even now Steam, they see themselves as a more broader ecosystem than just a rigid console.

…err..let’s see how this goes first. /monkaS

Yeah go figure it’s console exclusive first and PC will come out eventually.

I don’t get why that has to be the case here though – PC version is literally playable via the Japanese client right now. Unless they’re changing up server infrastructure or the monetization (which last I checked was fairly good for an F2P with MAGs being the main exception) I don’t see why the PC version would need to be delayed.

Sounds like the Beta is exclusive, but likely proper release will be same-day between Xbox and PC whenever it’s finally given a date–which makes sense, since Microsoft is in both of those.

And… aside from just obtaining the servers, and perhaps optimization on the Xbox, the only work needed is the translations (redone hopefully, not the SEA English ones please).

But Microsoft is pushing for a win wherever they honestly can, which is why you have to go through a ‘third’ party app on their stores rather than simply sign up on a website–even on PC. They are trying to drive as much of the attention away from the PC market (at least the major ones) and onto their own closed gardens. The app is a way to coerce people by offering garbage for downloading and using it… and the Xbox exclusive beta-test is because they want to try and coax people into purchasing a system…

Which, hey, coincides pretty darn well with the Holiday season, and that isn’t a coincidence.

Too bad that, while I’m interested in the game, I ain’t about to buy a system to ‘beta test’ their job. Nor am I going to waste disk-space by downloading and relying on some garbage extraneous Microsoft app on my already-Microsoft-10 computer. I have enough issues just with Microsoft 10 as is! I ain’t complicating garbage with more garbage that needs its own sorting pile.
