The Daily Grind: Which MMO would make for a great movie or miniseries?

MMORPGs crossing over into other entertainment mediums isn’t unknown to us at this point, of course. There was that Warcraft movie that one time. Seems like that was ages ago, doesn’t it? And there have been plenty of TV shows and films that ended up in MMO format (such as Defiance, Stargate Worlds, and The Matrix Online).

Our game worlds are rich with potential and stories, and I’m sure it’s crossed all our minds at one time or another that a movie or miniseries set in those places could be pretty amazing. Or they could totally betray the spirit of the game and be rage fuel for fans ever following.

What do you think? Which MMO worlds would be great settings for movies or TV miniseries?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Obligatory City of Heroes post.

I’d love an Elder Scrolls series that turns some of the lore books into episodes. Not based on the stories and quests that players go through, but the books players can read.
… Have Sheogorath host and narrate.

Secret World for sure. The universe of Fallout in general could be great for a post-apocalyptic series that has a comedic/crazy flair to it. FFXIV could make for some interesting miniseries focused on different stories/lore periods and such that we wouldn’t get to see simply from Echovision or flashbacks.

TSW as others have posted for sure, Diablo as posted would be cool, Anarchy Online I don’t know a lot about the lore beyond the basic concept but that could be cool too. I think though that video games, mmo’s, because of the nature of them as a potential story telling platform vs a 2 hour or so non interactive video audio story telling platform, video games especially mmo’s can be far superior or maybe just more fun. The concept behind Defiance, TV show, mmo crossover was really cool imho.

Yeah too bad the execution of Defiance was horrid. That + Eternal Crusade has made me really wary of any project that Nathan Richardsson serves as a producer for. Defiance and Eternal Crusade were both overly ambitious titles that were rushed/watered down and basically gigantic messes that struggled to recover.

WoW, TSW, GW2, ESO.

Eh.

I would probably watch a TV series about Star Citizen, Secret World, EVE, SWTOR or GW2…as long as it wasn’t made by Syfy.

EVe online. I mean just look at the cinematic trailers they have done they could make a tv-series just like how they make the trailers and have voice actors.

EVE Online would actually make a bad movie or miniseries UNLESS they will add a walking actors and turn it into something like Star Trek. Most people will get bored by what is shown in EVE trailers if the whole movie or miniseries will consist of ships shooting at each other and nothing else, regardless of voice actors. It is the same reason that so few people watch it on Twitch and EVE never even reached more than 65k players on single server. And I am telling this as a person who played it for many years.

few peoples around 500-1200 a day and as we speak 1448 people sures it´s not 2million lika dota but then eve is not for casual gamers.

And I did not say it need be all combat what I said it can be in the style as the trailers meaning Computer animated.

Then for story you have 3, 500 ish pages novels written by Author Tony Gonzales so you got 3 damn novels to base it all on.

And I also played for many years 14 years in fact.

Could they do defiance they can do eve and defiance did not have 10million players.

Star Wars Galaxies! Diablo! Conan Exiles! Call of Duty! Destiny! Home front!

In the reverse Chuck would make a great game.

GW2’s Asura deserve their very own series.

Any MMORPG can become great movie with a good writer and good director. The question should be more “which one you would prefer to see”. Personally I prefer to see miniseries in FFXIV world because catgirls and bunny girls ;-) Plus you have mandatory humanoids with pointy ears for people who like Elves and you have Lalas for people who like short races and Hrothgar for people who like to see less humanoid races. Just don’t let Netflix create it (I loved Witcher games but I do not like what Netflix did with it) or HBO.

Yes I totally agree with you on that but also you don´t need a good director or writer you need people that understand the games if they don´t understand it they they would just make up stuff and it would be like Final fantasy spirit with in a wired ass movie where the only final fantasy about is the names final fantasy, Cid and life stream.
