How do you feel about idle games? Occasionally I’ll pick one up on my phone to fiddle with for a while, but my interest for these sorts of experiences drops off pretty sharply after a couple of days. Perhaps if I cared about the theme, I would stick around for longer?
That might well be the case for Melvor Idle, an idle game that’s openly based on RuneScape. Currently in alpha development, Melvor Idle seeks to replicate the feel of leveling up RuneScape’s many interconnected skills — whether or not you’re actively “playing” this title: “Every skill in this game has its purpose, and interacts with other skills in unique and interesting ways. The training of one skill will benefit others, forcing you to make decisions about the best cause of action to take.”
The surprise success of this sole fan’s pet project enabled him to become a full-time game developer. Even so, he promises that his original vision of never introducing microtransactions into Melvor Idle will continue.
Melvor Idle also is available on Steam, Android, and iOS.
