The Daily Grind: Do you play different MMORPGs for different content types?

A while back on the MOP Podcast, I was waxing on about housing and crafting and player cities in SWG Legends, when Justin asked jokingly, “Do you even do any combat in that game?” And I laughed because I do when I must, but it’s boring to talk about because combat in Star Wars Galaxies has never been its strong point, not even when the devs retooled it for the NGE and started adding themeparks and heroic dungeons. The combat has always been bad, and there’s nothing the rogue server devs can do to rescue it. So while I do have a level 90 Smuggler/Beastmaster, I mostly use her to farm meat, bone, hide, and milk for my other toons. I don’t really do combat content for fun – it’s just not why I play SWGL. That game has crazy good housing and crafting. That’s why I’m there.

On the other hand, enjoyable group content is exactly why I play City of Heroes; while I do plenty of crafting and marketing in Paragon City, those things aren’t really the reason I play as they are the reason I play SWG. I just do them to fund my real reason.

In other words, I don’t think there’s one perfect MMORPG out there for me, so I play a few of them to fill in the gaps left by the others. How about you? Do you play different MMORPGs for different content types?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
