League of Legends discusses arena mode, gameplay changes, and a PvE ‘bullet heaven’ mode

Change is a-comin’ for several portions of League of Legends, as several devs from Riot Games have come together across multiple blogs and one recent video to discuss new modes, updates, and other things for the MOBA.

The studio first starts things off by talking about arena mode, which had a pretty successful run this past December but also saw play hours dwindle as time went on. When the mode makes its comeback, it will have a longer run, will allow for 16 players per lobby, and introduce a game-changing class of item known as prismatics. More details will come in a future dev blog later.

For those who would rather PvE in LoL, there will be a “bullet heaven” survivor PvE game mode that looks an awful lot like Vampire Survivors if descriptions and a screenshot are anything to go by. This mode will pit solo or player teams against waves of enemies in what’s intended as a more chill and accessible experience, though players who seek a bit of challenge are invited to try it out as well when it goes live during the game’s mid-year event.

There is also discussion about several gameplay updates, including a wide variety of updates for ranked mode rewards, details about a May 1st art and sustainability update (ASU) for the character Lee Sin, changes to champion mastery scheduled for May 15th, and plans for gameplay clarity on other character skins and an ASU for Teemo in patch 14.20. It’s all outlined in the video below or summarized by the studio here.

Riot Games is considered a controversial company in the gaming world following a 2018 exposé of the sexual discrimination and harassment inherent in what workers described as its “bro culture.” The scandal brought forth accusations against multiple developers and high-ranking executives and ultimately led to a developer labor dispute and walk-out. Former workers and the state of California, which alleged that Riot was refusing to cooperate with its investigation, lodged lawsuits though Riot settled with one victims’ group at the end of 2021 for over $100M.
