Whatever happened to Wildcard’s pirate-themed sandbox MMO Atlas?

Dead in the water

It might be by design that we’ve collectively forgotten about Atlas, the piratical survival sandbox MMO by Wildcard substudio Grapeshot Games that was at one point meant to offer 40,000-person servers: The last major news that came out of the title was from last June, when it confirmed Season 13’s release. So whatever happened to this one?

It would seem that Grapeshot has all but abandoned the game without even leaving early access: Steam lists its last update was in May 2023, the game’s website hasn’t shared any updates since, and all of its social media accounts have gone silent.

As one might anticipate, this has had a trickle-down effect on Steam user reviews, with “Mixed” reports coming in that oscillate between players saying that there’s a lot to do despite its early access nature and others warning away from an abandoned game (our favorite is one review that simply reads, “Don’t.”

In spite of it all, there are still people playing the game, though obviously nowhere near the number from its all-time peak of over 500K (it’s averaging under 500). The fact that it’s still online is probably a benefit to those holdouts, but otherwise this one looks to have been pushed to the furthest back burner possible.
