The Daily Grind: Which MMOs are best at letting you bring the player, not the class?

It was MOP’s Eliot who put the ol’ canard about bringing the player not the class in my head again recently, thanks to his Stormlight Archive joke in the comments of the post on Stormforge a while back.

Not every MMORPG is good at paying off the “bring the player, not the class” philosophy, mind you; some MMOs say that’s their goal and then don’t quite achieve it or just pivot and do the opposite with their class and content design (Guild Wars 2, ahem). Others – City of Heroes is coming immediately to mind – were designed with very traditional class construction and yet somehow the game still makes space for all-Defender groups, Troller tanking, and whatever the hell Stalkers do now.

Sorry Stalkers.

So let’s talk about this for today’s Daily Grind. Which MMOs are really the best at letting you bring the player, not the class?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
