The Overwatch 2-playing world is close to the launch of Season 12, and when it does arrive, it will bring a host of updates to the shooter’s competitive play as detailed in the game’s latest Director’s Take post.
System Designer Gavin Winter outlines several new additions to the competitive scene that will arrive in the next season, leading off with a new event known as a competitive drive, which grants drive score progress to several distinct ranks and associated nametag signatures for every match win. A date for this event wasn’t tied down, but players can expect this near the end of Season 12 during a weekend.
Next is word about the rank reset that will come with Season 12’s launch, which is being done primarily to better fine tune the placement of players in the very top and very bottom of the competitive spectrum.
The blog then talks about a wave respawn system that will take the place of the group respawn feature that reportedly helped to lessen one-sided matches. This respawn method will effectively help characters get back into the fight faster outside of overtime, though general respawn time has been slightly increased. Still, Blizzard has seen positive results of this respawn feature in playtests and hopes it will further reduce one team dominating the other.
Last but not least, players will see an increase in slots to their avoid list and will see a minor speed buff during flashpoint matches. In short, there are a whole lot of updates headed to competitive play when Season 12 begins August 20th.
