Earlier this month, NetEase officially confirmed the existence of Destiny: Rising, a mobile version of the looter shooter that was initially leaked by Bungie devs – and a game that has raised plenty of brows among series fans. So it’s perhaps no surprise that the suspicion led to some almost immediate assumptions after a UI screenshot started circulating online.
The screenshot in question, which was first posted on the game’s official Twitter account, primarily highlighted the Gauntlet Ops activity for groups of six to take on. But a similar image share posted by the Twitter account of fansite Destiny Bulletin – and the post that got the most traction – saw players call attention to what appeared to be a stamina mechanic at the top of the Gauntlet Ops UI. A gold token icon sits next to the numbers 120/360, which looked an awful lot like an energy resource players would need to spend to access the activity not unlike the resin system in Genshin Impact.
The concern was also raised by a fan’s reply on the game’s official Twitter account, which garnered an explanation from NetEase: “We’ve seen a few people asking about the same thing, but we’d like to clarify that the gold icon represents Pinnacle Energy, which is used to collect Pinnacle Rewards,” the studio writes. “Even if you run out of Pinnacle Energy, you can still play and receive rewards.”
Reaction to this revelation looks to be pretty mixed scrolling through replies to the post: Some vets are likening the restriction to similar reward gates thrown up in Destiny 2, while others still call it a stamina mechanic, presume that the referenced rewards are meager, and guess that recharging pinnacle energy will be one of the mobile title’s monetization layers. How this game will be monetized still isn’t explained by NetEase yet, but clearly fans are bracing for the worst.
