I haven’t played World of Warcraft in a good long while now, but back in the long long ago, all the best trashtalk went down in The Barrens. If you poke around the internet, you can see there are a bunch of reasons for why it happened: the types of people who played Horde, the unusually large size and level-band of the zone, and the fact that players were funneled back to or through it over their grinding journey. Either way, Alliance didn’t really have an equivalent, so even as an Alliance main, I still think of The Barrens as the pre-eminent shitposting zone of MMOs. Although maybe somewhere in Albion Online could give it a run for its money?
But of course, there are plenty of MMOs and MMO zones with, ahem, colorful reputations, and I’d like to hear about some more today. Which MMO zone has the most notorious reputation – and what did it do to earn it?
