MassivelyOP’s not-so-serious end-of-the-year awards continue today with our pick for best worst transmedia synergy. (If you’re wondering what the heck a Golden Yachtie is, you can get caught up with the first award.)
And the winner is…
SMITE’S TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES
I don’t know who asked for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to be playable in SMITE, but that’s a thing that definitely exists now.
“A cinematic trailer has unveiled the TMNT Battle Pass which dresses up Osiris, Sun Wukong, Loki, and Mercury as Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo respectively. An accompanying presser points out that while these skins don’t change the abilities of the respective roster members, they do feature all-new models, rigging, animations, and effects, making these a bit more than just simple skins. The Battle Pass will feature a variety of other TMNT-styled goodies as well, including a Mouser ward skin and a unique emote, while the Prestige track of the pass will introduce alternate versions of the Turtles’ skins done up in bright and colorful ’80s cartoon style. In addition, there will be separate purchases of a Master Splinter skin for Hachiman and a Shredder skin for Ravana.”
Runners-up? I have a pair:
- Black Desert ran a bizarre cross-promotion with the Netflix young-adult Arthurian fantasy show, Cursed, literally putting the show’s protagonist, Nimue, into the game.
- And then World of Warships did a cross-promo with Transformers, which gave Eliot, who is literally a Transformers expert, the opportunity to wonder why it didn’t go for any of the obvious sea-faring ‘formers for the tie-in.
