Star Citizen debuts the new Ironclad heavy hauler and shares an update on the Polaris capital ship

The Invictus free-fly event continues to be the focus for Star Citizen, particularly as it’s being used as a platform to debut all-new and upcoming internet spaceships for the sandbox. That extends to this week’s Inside Star Citizen episode, as Cloud Imperium used it to debut an upcoming new chunky space truck. Well, more like a space barge, actually.

The Drake Ironclad is SC’s latest spacecraft that is designed to be another step upward in the logistical career, bridging the gap between the Caterpillar and Hull-C in terms of size and cargo capacity. This six-person ship, as its name suggests, is a heavily armored transport, with most of its space dedicated to an immense cargo hold that can be accessed from either a front-facing ramp or via a large door that opens above the hold. It also features some turrets for self-defense and for tractor beaming goods, along with a smaller cargo area dedicated to more secure smaller items styled after police station evidence lock-ups.

The video also grants players a progress report on the development of the Polaris capital ship, which has had its exterior clear final art (thus its initial arrival to Invictus) while its interior continues its move through greybox development. This portion of the video outlines updates to the bridge, looks at several subsystem areas, and talks up the ship’s torpedo bay.

Both ships will be debuting at their own respective in-game events, with the Ironclad set to arrive during Drake’s turn at Invictus on May 25th and the Polaris scheduled for this year’s Intergalactic Aerospace Expo. For now, both ship updates can be seen in the video.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $650M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
