World of Warcraft launches the ‘biggest anniversary in the history of Azeroth’ today

As promised, Blizzard is kicking off the big 20th anniversary celebration for World of Warcraft this afternoon. Is it actually WoW’s 20th anniversary? Well, not yet; it’s technically not until next month. But are you really going to complain about getting it a little bit early? Especially when Blizzard is calling it “the biggest anniversary event in the history of Azeroth”? We thought not!

As we’ve been covering, the event is actually a ton of events looped together for different playstyles.

  • Raiders are being treated to a new raid version of the classic Blackrock Depths dungeon, which has apparently been skippable and farmable for ages. Not this version!
  • Dungeongoers will see the addition of more classic dungeons to the Timewalking mechanic, including Deadmines, Zul’Farrak, Dire Maul East and West, and Stratholme Undead and Living.
  • PvP players get a new PvP battleground called Korrak’s Revenge, an homage to classic Alterac Valley.
  • PvE players can take advantage of new world bosses and Chromie’s new scenario.
  • And merrymakers can check out the carnival at the Caverns of Time hub, with storytelling, balloon rides, an ice rink, costumes, and rotating themes.

Of course, this patch is also an update for War Within; it’s packed with class updates, an expansion of classes for the dracthyr race, and a huge experience buff. No need to rush through it, either; these events run through January 6th.

The studio has a new walkthrough video on the entire event up this afternoon. Have fun!
