There are only a few more weeks left in December, let alone 2024, but Star Citizen is still claiming in its final video digest for the year that alpha 4.0 is on track for launch sometime this month while also summarizing the variety of features the new alpha version will introduce.

“Teams and studios around the world are working diligently to release alpha 4.0 into all players hands before the end of this year,” opens creative content lead Jared Huckaby in the video. The rest of the runtime goes over all of the major additions in summary, including server meshing, the arrival of the Pyro system and the wormhole travel that links it to Stanton, the variety of new missions and locations in the Pyro system such as the PvPvE contested zone, unique settlements, new fauna, and new cave systems for planets on both Pyro and Stanton.

The video also previews some of the new ship updates coming to the game in alpha 4.0, specifically functioning blast shields and cargo doors for the Anvil Carrack, the debut of the Mirai Guardian, and updates to quantum travel speeds that are specific to quantum drive grade and class. What isn’t coming, of course, is the engineering gameplay loop, which CIG has delayed because of stability issues. There’s still no hard date for all of this to come, but there is the video that showcases what’s on deck below.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $700M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
