Guild Wars 2 unveils the Guardian elite spec: Dragonhunter

Here we are in the wilds of Guild Wars 2 once again, and you can see we’ve got a big old dragon right there. He’s a beauty, he is. The worst thing you could do here, naturally, is shoot him full of arrows from a divinely powered bow, so we’re going to be doing exactly that! Why? Because we’re Dragonhunters, the newly revealed Elite Specialization for the Guardian, and also because killing any and all dragons in Guild Wars 2 is probably just good practice.

Despite its name, the Dragonhunter’s powers work just fine on non-draconic targets. The specialization is focused on giving Guardians a different way to play, making the Virtues more active gameplay mechanics and encouraging players to support their allies while firing from the back lines. It’s a specialization full of traps (including the healing abilities) and support abilities; check out the full reveal for more details on just how you can bring down the big dragons with your new tricks.

Guardian has been my main since beta and after seeing this I have lost all desire to continue playing it.

I been reading Reddit and GW2 forums and so far the most disappointing thing is the name itself. Although a few posters have complained about the use of traps. I was really hoping for the name Paragon, but I do like Arbiter which someone on Reddit has gotten some support. I really hope ArenaNet reconsiders the name. It’s far too generic.

I was giggling like an idiot when i read the name dragon hunter,  I don’t know why and i play guardian in GW2.

My wee heart is a bit broken by the name. They are so close to being dubbed Dragonslayers, which is the name of my local gaming club that I used to be President of. :P

confectionally Dragons are my only real pet peeve in video games and the fantasy genre.   Please say this was a mix-up and this was supposed to be rogue.

So. Are there new kewl abilities for this spec? Any reasons to do it other than visual bling?

Pretty underwhelming for me.  “Dragonhunter” is a silly name and I was under the impression that specializations are supposed to be a related but somewhat different sub-class from their main, while this feels completely different from the Guardian’s whole holy theme which I really like.  It sounds more like a rejected idea for a Ranger subclass.

I can get into this. I like playing tank classes and I like the abilities that they’re doing with the elite spec.

Not very interested in this reveal, honestly. The Guardian itself was kinda boring to me, personally. LOVED the Warrior so much more.

Looking forward to the Necromancer & Warrior reveal.

I was hoping like everyone else that they’d use the Paragon as it’s name, but maybe they’re waiting on that because they know next expansion they’ll be making spears a land weapon?

anatheod Xephyr Yeah this spec could be good or garbage, I don’t really care that much tbh, I like my guardian the way it is, I don’t need a new spec to keep enjoying it.

Xephyr yeah…in pve traps are mostly useless and thats because they tie up with conditions. Mesmer’s new class mechanic is gamechanging and i dont feel the same way about Guardian’s new mechanics. However the extra mobility is much needed as well as a valid ranged option. It will also spice things up a bit since Virtues, as they are right now,are something you dont bother much about in rotations. You jist hit a button and you are ok.
Do i think that guardian will be lame for PvE content because of their new specialization? Absolutely NOT. Even if it ends up a lame condi traitline, the rest of the traitlines (as they currently are) are so solid that Guardian’s spot in group content is pretty much set in stone.

Whoa….the name was rather unexpected. This throws off my entire prediction list.

Dragonhunter is the lamest name ever D: I won’t say anything about the spec itself until I’ve actually had the chance to play it, but traps and a support bow doesn’t sound very exciting to me as a PvE player. Mesmer spec sounds cooler, but they also only got an offhand weapon, so we’ll see how this turns out. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Polyanna Even though I am excited for the expansion, this video is a HUGE fail in continuing the excitement. I just have to ask, what were they trying to portray here? Very boring to watch.

Nyite I’m hoping for a death knight type for the necro. Yeah they don’t have heavy armour but they have everything else for it. Plus having seen people talking about anti-paladin for the guardian which I really do not want to see. I would prefer something like that for another class and have my guardian stay closer to the original concept of a “holy style support”.

imkc30  You can still play using the base archtypes, these are just new options.

Or they’ve had dinosaurs since GW1 and just updated the models they already had.. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Dinosaur And this guy was also in the trailer showing the wilds of the Maguuma Jungle.  Where by chance was your ‘zinger’ at that time? Right….

Troll harder?  Or better yet just don’t troll at all, just leave?  Mmmkay, Thanks.

came back after a year and started playing my ranger because i generally gravitate towards archer archetypes.  But my ranger will be turning into a druid and my guardian alt will be turning into a ranger….hmmm seems a little uninspired.  I will wait to see more before i pass judgement, i like variety.

Sure the video is boring.  But reading into it seems that they’re giving the Guardian many more heals and CC capabilities.  This pushes the class further into the support role than previously was.  That is definitely a great thing and does give a more soft-trinity than a solid holy one.

Polyanna I find most MMO videos pretty boring since it’s a hell of a lot more fun to be behind the keyboard than watch MMO combat, but yeah… this was a especially dull.

This is the first thing to have me excited about Heart of Thorns. I don’t know if it’s enough to buy it, and I do kind of wish it were any weapon other than bow, but the description of the abilities sounds right up my alley.

If they were trying to make this new class look like fun to play, this video is a great example of how not to do that.

Longbow and trap using guardian… sounds like it’s stepping on Ranger a bit too much.

TomTurtle

I’m excited for it, both for having a bow and having long range. The Guardian hasn’t appealed to me too much so I’m hoping this gets me into the profession more.

bryanjturner Based on player reactions, you shouldn’t have much to worry about. People are very underwhelmed with this elite specialization so far doubting its use in any meta. Though it’s best to wait and see.
Besides, ranged isn’t usually meta in many areas of the game due to lack of cleave and the benefits of stacking.

Looks like they ripped some creature designs right from Tera, which is probably good because most of their creatures and mobs were boring.

Marchand

Did they forget that literally every other class is a ‘Dragonhunter’? You hunt dragons. That’s what Guild Wars’ story is about.

The biggest beef I had with GW2 was that my guardian main’s build and playstyle was exactly the same since launch, despite the few balance passes that occurred. I really, REALLY want to like this… but this spec just seems really uninspired and does nothing for me. :(

Very cool.  When I do play I usually cycle between Guard and Ranger, so actually very excited about both Dragonhunter and Druid

Hopefully front-line Guards will remain strong and viable. Don’t let popular opinion dictate how you play.

Even though the Guard is my favorite class (and my only lvl 80), I’m actually more excited for the Druid and Chronomancer. I’ll give this a fair shake though and reserve final judgement after I see how this spec actually plays.

Oh, very cool… Personally I love the guardian class, but my favorite weapon in most games is a Bow and Arrow… This resonates with me.

bryanjturner

While this sounds like a cool concept and spread of new mechanics I might have to shelve my guardian. I play my guardian like a frontline protector, I worry that this new specialization will become the new meta leaving me out in the cold. I hope this new Engineer concept with the floating turrets helps fill that frontline protector role I dig.
