Massively OP Podcast Episode 39: Giving thanks

With the holidays craziness beginning, Bree and Justin take a somber, dignified moment to give their thanks for MMO gaming. After which they complain about outta whack developers, speculate on the new year, and handle a whole bunch of listener emails.

It's the Massively OP Podcast, an action-packed hour of news, tales, opinions, and gamer emails! And remember, if you’d like to send in your own letter to the show, use the “Tips” button in the top-right corner of the site to do so.

I know this will knock one of Bree's sacred cows, but CoH had one of the most insidiously gameplay limitations I ever experienced during a trial/f2p acct. I rolled my char and immediately realized their default mouse setting was inverse. After the game made it clear I had to give them money just to set the mouse to normal, I couldn't uninstall fast enough. As someone who buys/bought tons of mmo's, I can safely say that had the game been even remotely competent, I would've bought it, but that little cheap nickel move cost them a customer. Pretty telling when a guy who gave funcom money for six months of half-baked AoC thinks you're not dealing on the level.

I knew I was going to be the minority with my mail topic..but clearly Justin making a suggesting of minecraft wasn't very helpful. Bree as always very insightful. I was looking for that 20 min extra rant as I always enjoy those rants.
ANything really meant within the confines of the world and genre. Basically I always look for the simulator style of mmo sandbox, which I should have also stated.
Thank guys for adding my mail..I have already sent you another :P

Actually not only does black desert have a housing system, it probably has one of the most extensive housing system in an MMO yet. There will be no land grab though because they decided a while ago to make housing instance based rather then open world. That opened up a lot of interesting features though.

In Black Desert towns have a good number of houses available for sale. Players can buy more then one, in fact they need to buy more then one cause housing also ties into crafting. You can use your properties in different ways, not just as a personal house but also as a warehouse, blacksmith, shipyard etc...

dionm01 As a person who bought the game, you still have access to basically everything you could do before HoT...
That said, there are gripes and grumbles from people who play primarily/only WvW because of changes to how WvW bonuses are done via guild halls now. The new scribe craft is... atrociously bad and it's the new way to get prohibitively expensive WvW supply drops and such. The access is still there, as long as you join a guild with a hall, but the method changed for the worse.

It also stinks that non-HoT players cannot have access to guild buffs. The buffs used to be passive, but now you chose one 24-hour personal buff from whatever you guild has available. While non-HoT players can go into guild halls, they are not allowed to converse with the merchants there... and thus, cannot grab the free-to-guidies buffs those merchants provide. Those are the only examples I know of.

Esoteric Coyote Zulika_Mi_Nam Most of the ones that get in my house do so through the sliding glass doors.  The weatherstripping is flexible enough for them to nudge and since those doors work via a wheel on the raised ridge the space between wheels is big enough for the smaller ones to wiggle through.

Quincha Jake Young Its because the main player base of guild wars does not understand that these restrictions have been placed on you. And with fast travel people are bouncing around a lot. I understand that you feel the need to defend your game but this has been the most restricted i have ever experienced in a free to play game. That include Star wars the old republic.

Quincha only if you are mutual friends can you talk anytime. Just adding them as a friend on your side still puts restrictions. You can talk to people if they are on the same zone as you if they leave for any reason or you need to you lose access to be able to talk to them.

Party chat is definitely disabled for long enough that you just don't use it and people try to figure out why you are not responding and eventually you just get kicked.

Quincha Yeah, as of this post I'm stuck in stop and go traffic fighting holiday traffic on the freeways trying to " Get Out of L.A." here in Southern California.  This is a ZOO!!!  out here.  It sucks sometimes when you have to work for living.

First of all i wanted to say Thanks for choosing my question its one of those things that you hope for but never actually expect to see happen. One of the most frustrating things about it is you have people sending you tells to try and help and want to help but you can no longer respond to them as you have hit your limit of whispers. I havn't really figured out what the exact limitation is. I did find out even if i had managed to find a group i wouldn't be able to use party chat until level 30. World V World unlocked i guess at level 60.

I was unable to go to lion's arch until level 35 or leave the starting area until level 10 both of which were minor inconveniences since i didn't really know that lions arch was even a thing until well past that. One of the things it has created for me is a huge gap in knowledge about the game. I am level 80 elementalist and did not find utility abilities until around level 55. Until recently i did not realize you could switch weapons to get a new set of abilities. Oh one of the funnier ones is i thought i was doing something that was evade bugging monsters for a short time turns out the evade that pops up over their heads in normal. Basically it churned out a level 80 that fundamentally does not understand how the game works on any level.

Other restrictions i cannot buy things from the Auction House or sell them. I cannot use any of the PvP chat channels even /say seems to be blocked behind buying the game so coordinating with your team is not even feasible. I have found a completely dead Free to play forum that is linked off of their main forum site. There seems to be a moderator trying to answer the meager posts of people that have managed to find the forum. There is a large chunk of the gem store goodies i cannot purchase i am not sure if this is due to being free or just not having latest expansion.  There is no Daily login Bonus for free accounts. I cannot send items or money through the mail.  Even if i had managed to find a guild i would have no guild bank access. Bag slots are limited to three.

This is not free to play its a trial which would be fine if they had billed it as that.

Anyway thanks MOP you guys rock!.

Hello Guild Wars 2 community, I have a question for you all regarding the latest expansion and the ramifications thereof.  I listened to the latest episode of massively overpowered podcast and there was a small discussion regarding people's accounts and the differences between the accounts that the expansion changes.  I purchased GW 2 when it first came out, so do I still have all the access and the updates all away up to the latest expansion that you have to pay for separately.

The impression I got from the podcast, is that the original players who bought GW 2, that the game that we purchased has been devalued and that you no longer have access to the features that you paid for on the original purchase.

Please let me know or if you happen they have some links that would be most helpful.  Because as it stands right now, if my purchase has been devalued and I can no longer access features I paid for, I will be done with guild wars 2 and never purchase products from NCsoft again if that is the case.

Thanks for your comments on this matter, at it is greatly appreciated.

I view the "instant gratification" insult as something many people lob around as a means to justify their own appreciation for a game, and as a result, spurn those who don't share that appreciation, sometimes to the point of blaming them for a game doing poorly.

I'm with you on having a short race not be the butt of jokes, but I have a worry that they'd also be taken too seriously as a kneejerk response to that trope, maybe even elevated in a setting to be Mary Sues. I don't know, it's a weird worry. Also, Justin's idea of a phoenix-inspired race was very interesting. I like it! I had never thought of that twist before. I could imagine that them being reborn not as completely new, but as having learned lessons of what does and does not work to be better the next go around. I also imagine they walked off a lot of cliffs when first starting out not knowing better, haha.

And uh, I <3 Labyrinth. Great childhood memories there. I always feel happy when it gets mentioned by others, even when they're mocking it. :P

Nanulak 100% agree. I prefer the Camelot Unchained old school box price + monthly sub with no cash shop, worst case at least a B2P game like Black Desert and others. FFXIV ARR is good too with sub just wish there was zero cash shop (even though its not a bad one) with sub fee.
It's not even about the money to me either , just the amount of annoyance I've seen from people that make 10+ throwaway accounts to shut down chat randomly , even guilds dedicated to doing nothing but trolling because there's zero monetary threat.

If you don't have to spend at least a few bucks to make an account , not going to touch the game myself either.

I love this podcast and I'm incredibly thankful it's still around!

That said, please please PLEASE fix the audio. One of you is always much louder than the other and I'm either straining to hear or cringing from the loud volume.

Wrong information in this podcast. People generally had no problems doing heroic 2+ after the nerf, it was more about the inconvenience of killing mobs taking too long. It was very few specific heroics that actually became problematic, but of course people whine and bitch about nerfs, especially when they're done in this magnitude. Nonetheless, it was a very needed nerf. Now the companions are buffed again, but it's not really fixed, just catered for the interactive movie people who don't want to give a crap about the fights.

Zulika_Mi_Nam Esoteric Coyote I never saw him again, I don't know how he got in, I guess when we left the door open when it was raining.  I wish I could've found him, but my hubby was adamant if he found a way in, he'll find a way out.  I have not found a husk anywhere.  So, I like to hope he made it out.  Or he lives in our cupboards eating spiders and other bugs that wander in. /shrugs

Good cast.  F2P is a scam in my experience.  Every time I try to play the game as free, there is always a hurdle that I can not overcome without spending money.  In the end F2P costs me more that any subscription game and due to the games core mechanics having been built around this model, it always seems gimmicky.

All I know is that I am 100% done with F2P games.

Esoteric Coyote It once took me about 2 weeks to catch a gecko in my house.  They will dry to a husk with no access to water in a short time, but this guy found his way to a drain of a bathtub.  He would sit in the drain with his head poking out and go further into the drain if I got to close.  After a few days of him not leaving the drain I noticed he was getting pale and thin, I put a cup of water close to the drain.  Then sometimes when I left that area of the house for a while I would come back to see him in the cup, but as soon as I got close to the tub -zipppp! back to the drain again.
So I kept moving the cup further and further away from the drain until it was at the far end and once I spied him there on the cup, I got a towel, soaked it in the kitchen, and wrung it out.  I sneaked over and threw the towel over the drain from like 6 feet away and it made a big thud sound. The poor guy ran onto the towel stopping where the drain was. Realizing his escape path was blocked he looked at me with that "you bastard!" look.  I put him outside where my AC unit drains condensation and he hung out there the rest of the day chasing every ant he saw.

The issue with Blade and Soul is that it is NCSoft yet again who is releasing in the West.  Nearly all of their Western releases have been "low key", save for GW2 (and that has more to do with the fanbase and A.Net doing their own promotional push of the game). But just looking at other NCSoft releases for the West can tell you how little they care about that particular section of the world.  Their eggs are all in one basket:   Korea (more particularly, Lineage).  They do have a large portion profit out of China as well, so that is to not be forgotten.  However the Chinese market is finicky in that every new release as a bloom period followed by a dying of phase that never regrows .

This spider story reminds me of thing that happened to me.  One night, I remember I had forgot to put away cookies after cooling them.  We were just about to go to bed for the night, so I was standing there in my pjs putting cookies in a container.  I went to go drop the crumbs into the garbage can when something leaped out from behind the trash can.  I nearly screamed, not that scared of mice or snakes, but it scared the poop out of me.  It darted under the cupboards so I slowly lowered to peek and it stared right back at me.  The follow conversation happened.  "Honnnneeey, there's a lizard in the kitchen...", my husband replied "How big?".  And I answered "About two inches... ?"   He said "Leave it alone and come back to bed, it'll be fine."  There was a baby gecko hanging out in our kitchen.  I have no idea what happened to it.  But yep.  Gecko.  Welcome to Texas.

This probably isn't the place to post this, but GW2 servers have emptied out in WvW and you can now transfer to any server.  They may close again for prime time, but if you check in the morning they should be available.  So you can join the MoP guild on their server, Tarnished Coast I think?  I have forgotten, or join your friends in tier 1.  While WvW is very broken right now, I'm sure (well I hope) Anet will fix it.  And the servers will get locked again.

Omedon I really hate it when someone says "Oh people want instant gratification!"  Like GW2 it's all over the place because of mastery grinds, precursor crafting, guild buffs, ascended crafting. etc.  And It just makes me twitch whenever someone leaves fair constructive criticism only to get people reply "Microwave generation, they want it now."  And all those systems I mentioned seem really broken and not at all fun at the moment, well at least most of them.  I don't know about you, but I don't want to log on and be handed stuff, but I do like to earn it with a fair amount of effort and time.  Pretty fine balance between fun and not fun.

I get why there are F2P restrictions but I've always felt more inclined to spend money on a game when I feel that I'm doing so because I want to rather than because my arm is being twisted.
SWTOR is definitely not scoring points with me for this right now.  I've spent money on the game before - multiple extra character slots to feed my altitis and other unlocks - but I'm not currently subscribed.  Unfortunately my Agent is currently unable to progress due to a bugged class mission ("Darth Zhorrid Arrives" - look it up and be amazed that this has been a known issue for literally years.)  As a non subscriber the in-game support button is greyed out, I have no forum posting priveleges, and no out of game option either
In the end I phoned the account helpline, and they gave me a support email address.  Three days on... still waiting for a reply to that email.  I am a little curious as to whether or not I'll eventually get a reply...

It hasn't been a year yet? Really? Wow, you guys have written a ton of content! It feels like it's been longer, but in a good way.
I appreciate your little rant on "entitlement." I see that term used a lot to dismiss the types of concerns I have, like wanting easy access to costumes and housing vs. having those things reserved for prestige rewards. When a game actually caters to my play style, I'm generally satisfied for a long time, playing dress up or decorating my house. Meanwhile the players that would call me "entitled" are complaining about a lack of stuff to do. So, that's frustrating.

YES! THANK YOU BREE FOR YOUR "INSTANT GRATIFICATION" COMMENTS!

Guess what people, the MMO market is saturated!  My time means something. Game A will provide. Does game B provide? No? Ok, back to game A.  Compete for my time or GTFO, because my time is precious, and that is NOT an evil! It's called being mortal and respecting my and my friends' time!

It's 2015. Game A is providing.  Therefore providing can happen.  Does your game provide? No? Well keep up, and don't expect my time or money!  Yes, I can expect gratification in a reasonable amount of time because IT HAS BEEN PROVEN POSSIBLE AND WE HAVE OPTIONS!  Those options are there, they are not going away, because if we reach a point where those options aren't there, we'll have much bigger problems, so look at the now, look at the providing, gloriously providing market: Devs, play on that level or accept nichedom, through many people moving on to OPTIONS THAT ARE A THING.
You, as an MMO community are not entitled to my "hope to be as satisfied as you are someday through hard work," no, no you're not.  I walk in and have fun, or I move on. The end.
Actually no, that's not the end, let's swing this around to another topic touched in this podcast: Sandboxes.
The sandbox the writer-in-person mentioned sounded totally possible as a single player game!  Do you know why more "MMOs" like that aren't being made?  Because every bit of progress you make is seen by some person (someone WITH A RIGHT TO SAMPLE THE AFOREMENTIONED OPTIONS) as likely something taken from them.  Sandboxes are about doing anything?  Ok, guess what, in an MMO, you have to do that in sync with someone else, and guess what (drumroll please) the internet ISN'T SPECIAL ANY MORE and most people know this and won't be held in check by some unwritten social contract of awe and magical newness, they will treat each other like shit with their "power to do anything."  All it takes is one.
So why are "sandboxes" less common in AAA? Because only a fool puts AAA money into something where the experience is entirely dependant on the internet at large, of consumers WITH OPTIONS where they must ALL have fun for their time and money!  Someone has to lose in an MMO sandbox, that's why the themepark model reigns supreme: Because for my time, I'd better not be present to prop up your fun, the game exists to prop up MY fun or I move on... to my OPTIONS which ARE A THING.
