Boot up your Age of Conan account for a free level 80 toon on its ninth birthday

So, Age of Conan players. Let’s talk. I know this year has been kinda rough on you. You found out, as we did, that your game was going to be maintenance-moded just a few months ago in a tiny aside in a financial letter to corporate investors. That hurt. And your baby brother, Conan Exiles, has sucked up all of dad’s attention. And money. You could rant at the unfairness of it all, or you could be grateful that at least you’re not being sunsetted like so many great MMORPGs before you. I won’t judge you for either.

But if you are playing, or think you might someday again, maybe take a peek right now as the elder Conan game turns nine years old. Yes, nine years ago this very month, we all logged into Tortage… no, actually, let’s not talk about Tortage. It’s birthday time. And Funcom is trying to make it worth your while with a free level 80 character boost and a free character slot, as long as you had an account before today, and as long as you log in before May runs out.

Shadows of the Past has also been enabled, along with cash shop sales and bonus rewards from raiding.

See, it’s not so bad. Maybe your maintenance mode will look more like Final Fantasy XI’s than Guild Wars 1’s. You never know.

If your password isn’t accepted when trying to log in using an existing Funcom account, go to your account settings on the web. There you can “create” an Age of Conan login (under “Add a Game”, IIRC) for your account. You explicitly need to do that so your account is “unlocked” for AoC. You can’t just use your existing TSW or Conan Exiles account as-is.

If you never played AoC, do yourself a favor and start at level 1. This game is about journey and there are tons of great quests and lore out there. Also start at PvE server Crom, since it is the only one high populated.

Well okay, I mean, its a free high level character.

Then again I deleted a free high level WoW character just because I didn’t like the look of it while I wanted to focus on a ‘real’ one.

Lol I made the mistake of the PvP server for my free character and I was totally lost in the area they put me in. Oh well. Maybe I’ll quest from lv 1 one day :)

I did it just for the freebie. Never got past lvl 40 before i got bored of the game.

Password didn’t work, I reset 3 times. Didn’t work. They can’t get their shit together even in an attempt to win back players. Just a mess.

I take a new toon through Tortage every so often. Was a great game, Age of Tortage.

While there’s no way I’d go and jump back on my level 80 Assassin again it might be fun to check out a different class and see how the game looks today. So which class has the shortest combo’s? Also can you still swim up waterfalls? Honestly that was one of the best bugs in an mmo.

I was debating on giving AoC a shot since i never leveled a character through all the content. This would give me a good excuse to do so, while also getting a free lvl 80 for future play.

“For future play.”

It’s sad that everyone I know who had hoped AoC would be the MMo they have been asking for now plays Exiles on a private server.

I don’t call that a win Funcom and neither should you

Ive found all the AoC players I know tried Exiles & came back while new folk came over from Exiles also.
Different circles an all that.

While nice, I honestly don’t want to bother. I don’t want to invest any of my free hobby time into their mmos. I feel that AoC and TSW will both end up being sunsetted sometime within the next two years.

By committing to not doing any further work on either mmo they’ve guaranteed that players will keep drifting off so after while the balance will flip where they have to close them to save money. This is an mmo developer that has always has operation issues along with finance problems.

When did they last do any further meaningful work on AoC or TSW, or indeed AO? Yet people still play them and those games provide base revenue that helps keep the company ticking over while they focus their efforts elsewhere. I don’t see that changing, and I don’t therefore see any reason why Funcom would close down games that bring base revenue at very little maintenance cost.

No one foresaw City of Heroes sunsetting either. It was still bringing in revenue and NCsoft still cut it.
