MMO PvP comes in a lot of different flavors, and while all of them involve sticking the pointy end into the other man to some degree, there’s a lot of variation in terms of how and where that sticking is accomplished.

You can get your PvP fix in small dedicated arena instances or huge zones like Elder Scrolls Online’s Cyrodiil or one of ArcheAge’s various conflict areas, all of which feature PvE activities right alongside the PvP. Or you can opt for one of those free-for-all games like Darkfall or EVE, where the PvP switch is basically “on” at all times. And don’t forget about those realm-vs.-realm titles either!

How about you, MOP PvPers? Which style of MMO PvP do you prefer? Vote below!

Flamethekid   What would you do in an MMO where gear didnt do anything? Especially an MMO with PVP.
Ive never played an RPG that didnt revolve around making your character stronger. So MMO PVP where gear didnt mean anything, whats the point?

None, I don’t PVP.  A tad inaccurate.  I have participated in PVP, and don’t mind it in principle, but I tend to avoid it these days because while I don’t mind PVP, I find I very much do mind PVPers, and I have a more pleasant time when I avoid them.

tbh i feel like more people would like pvp if it was more skill based than gear based or casual friendly meaning that players can spend money for power

I choose “Other” because I like all the those listed above “Other”.

ESO  has a set number of days for a  “battle” .At the end of the battle period  they send you some gold depending on how much you fought…and wipe the “battlefield”  like the “war” never happened.
DAOC’s frontier has no queues . Whats conquered or lost stays that way until players change it.
CAMELOT UNCHAINED will also  have 3 faction conflict and a battlefield that only changes when players change it.

Open world – consensual only (flag yourself when you want to participate), and dedicated PvP in areas set aside for it specifically (such as battlegrounds or PvP zones). I enjoy PvP… but not all the time. Even less so as I get older, though when RIFT was in its prime…I was pretty active in PvP. These days I i just want to relax more or get things done. Much like a irritating little sibling that won’t stop bugging you, other players will actively seek you out if you’re good.  Even slaughtering the same players non-stop won’t give them the hint to stop pestering you, some people just love attention (even negative attention).  If you’re a goal oriented top player,  and get things done… it becomes an uphill battle quick. Everyone starts to come out of the woodwork and make a beeline for you…like you’re some sort of world boss. People start raid-marking you to try and get you out of the way first, making it a slow process to even play normally and get objectives done. It turns into work.
I guess… if there were better ways to be anonymous  I would be more into open world PvP. Often I get too recognized though, and that kills the fun somewhat. Zerging someone is hardly fair, but standard PvP tactics for weakling players…it seems.

None, I don’t PvP. However, I’m not completely against it. I might like a hypothetical VR world tech based FFA thing where people make their own factions etc. But I don’t like PvP when its not first person, yet I don’t like arenas or combat focused first person MP games… I really don’t have the game I’ve been looking for, so I just say I don’t PvP.

What always confuses me is when people complain when I engage in OWPVP on a PvP server. There is a warning when you realm select – you know what you are getting into when you make that selection. I truly enjoy having to keep my eyes open, knowing that whatever I may be doing could be interrupted at any moment. Do I gank lowbies? I do not. Do I camp players? I do not (I engage them once, and leave them be on their merry way). Will I ever engage someone more than once? A snarky, trash talking comment may get your served seconds, sure. I just love PvP, period. World events are always fun on a PvP server. New zones for dailies? One of my favorites. Instanced PvP? When it’s organized, it’s a blast. For those who don’t think they like PvP, I always encourage people to make an alt, join a PvP-centric guild, and get organized in voice coms. It will change the entire experience for you. PvP is what keeps me going in MMOs.
