Guild Wars 2 combat working as intended, will work even more as intended in the future

Don’t expect Guild Wars 2 to change its combat to mimic the traditional holy trinity setup that most MMOs have, but do expect that Heart of Thorns will be utilizing GW2’s combat system to greater potential.

That’s the message from Colin Johanson, who has since clarified combat-related comments he made during a livestream last week. Johanson told Reddit that ArenaNet is happy with how Guild Wars 2’s combat works and reinforced the design decision to allow players to have access to all three parts of the trinity in a single character.

“The point I really wanted to make in the live stream was the issue with the combat system in PvE isn’t the combat system,” Johanson wrote. “It’s that the mobs and encounters we have provided so far very rarely allow/encourage you to make use of the combat system as intended. There are some exceptions, but one of our goals with HoT is to help allow more room for players to experience the full range of the combat system in PvE.”

You could literally change none of the enemy AI whatsoever. Or change everything and rebuild the encounters from scratch. It would not matter.
If I could just make a character of any profession through stats, utilities, and traits… that could literally stand between the boss for an extended period and my team so they at least temporarily, can unload on the sucker…
Or a character that could keep everyone upright via heals and boons if they just don’t see the red ring in time.
Or a character that can keep a boss at bay with controls RELIABLY (freaking defiance)… to give folks time to get their cooldowns sorted, escape or drop AoEs…
You can do none of that in GW2. Make all the changes you want to encounters, enemy AI, and whatever. I’m still just playing slight variations of DPS characters through all the PvE content.
If GW2 actually supported a wide variety of playstyles, I never would have left.

Serrenity zyrusticae I didn’t say anything about the games being in direct competition with each other.
Only that the combat in B&S is a much, MUCH better example of how to eschew the trinity than GW2 ever was, is, or has been.

Line with more hugs digi_owl Bannex19 digi_owl is right. In particular, the Crucible of Eternity dungeon has a boss with lots of AoEs that can easily cover a room. The current tactic is to stack in a corner and when the boss releases his AoEs, everyone must dodge (stationary roll in the corner) to avoid those AoEs. If they don’t dodge, they die. If they dodge out of the corner, they’re vulnerable to the next boss attack that launches outward; meanwhile they would miss out on the party stack implementing condi-clears or heals.

This is a more recent example. This person is using healing gear with some pieces of zerker gear to help his 2 other members achieve maximum dmg without spending time kiting the boss. I ve personally asked her if the encounter is doable with zerker gear.  She said yes, although RNG is a greater factor then. What is important to understand, is that you need to nail down a block-evade rotation in order to succeed.

read this. Combat is working as intended. What the games is doing wrong is teaching you how to use the combat system to your advantage. You can solo all leveling experience literally using 2 buttons. This shouldnt be the case and it is why people have so hard time getting into dungeons and whining about the META.
You dont need zerker armor to run the game. You can as well run everything with healing gear though i dont see the reason why. What you need is the right traits at the right moment. That’s all. A boss is using projectiles? Bring reflects! A boss is heavy on conditions? Bring cleanses! A boss is using cleaves? Blind it! etc etc

There is no zerky mess in this game. Anyone who thinks like this, hasnt even scratched the surface of GW2’s gameplay. Yes, there is NO endgame. Yes, AI is beyond simplistic. Yes, most of the stat sets in the game are useless (PvEwise). But GW2’s combat isnt a steaming pile of shit and its actually the better hybrid of action combat and tab-target combat in the MMOs up-to-date.

zyrusticae Just like a whole litany of games before it?  Riiiiight

I’m interested to play Blade and Soul, I think it looks fun.  I hope it does well.  But I don’t think it’ll kill GW2.  Or hurt it.  Or anything.  Games and co-exist with other games.

carson63000 DahkohtLewin True but people that DPS (the vast majority) like to have tanks in their group.

Telos_ Joseph C Tera’s combat is static because your mistakes need consequences.  If you miss, you will pay the price because you are stuck in animation and the mob you are trying to fight gets you.  If you are too mobile, you can literally kite mobs forever, especially melee centric mobs.  Which is my in most action combat games you are stuck in animation.
GW2’s movement and combat is mobile but clunky to account for the AI NPCs in the game.  You move extremely slow while strafing and move slower while in combat which is one of the biggest faults in the game in my opinion, because if you had the same movement speed in strafing and in combat as walking/running you could kite mobs forever.  Even with the strafing speed restriction you can kite mobs, unless the mobs move quicker than you.
There are a lot of design fails in terms of combat, movement and encounters (for that movement, combat) in this game.  The AI in the game is stupid, and the encounters, movement was designed around that stupidity.

zyrusticae  I agree to an extent.  GW2 works but only for damage dealing.  B&S works so much better without the trinity.  Its like GW2 just went half way and tried to please everyone, but failed miserably. If they aren’t going to boost healing they might as well just revamp those traits / skills into alternative damage skills.  Also delete the stat.
