Guild Wars 2’s devs had way too much fun making the roller beetle mount

It’s Guild Wars 2’s most unusual mount yet — scratch that, the most unusual mount of most any MMORPG yet. And as players cruise with their brand-new roller beetles this week, no doubt many of them are thinking both “I’m going to die!” and “What were the developers thinking when they decided to take a rolling bug and turn it into a mount?”

To address the second point there, ArenaNet put out a video in which it discussed the formation of the mount and how it uses momentum and speed to do its crazy tricks.

“We had this thought of having the roller beetle be this fast dirt bike or something,” the dev team said. “Ramp off things, whee, flying in the air! It’s a fun, different type of movement.”

Give the video a watch after the break!

I like the mechanics, but man, I suck at it, especially drifting. I’m looking forward to trying it out in various maps and improve my skills.

Gendarran Fields is a great place to practice. I see lots of people there both racing and getting use to the mount.

Would you all like to hear the gospel of our Lord and Savior Petey?!?!?

Can attest, this is a very dangerous mount, lol.

You know I absolutely love this game, I do not regret spending any money on it at all. Unfortunately I no longer have the dexterity to play this game any more, my knuckles hurt from making too many rapid movements and the stiffness in general do not make them rapid enough. I went back to WoW, it’s a fine game I guess, not super passionate about it but at least I can play it well enough.

Hands down, the best and most unique use of mounts I’ve ever seen.

I always wanted them to add a Rollerrat morph in Anarchy Online, to see how that looked from 1st person view.
FFXIV does have a flying turtle that spins constantly .

Yes, but the problem is that FFXIV has no mount mechanics. Everything is “float”.

Those are so much fun but there is almost no use for them >_<

Yet.. Much like the other mounts, there will be gated content that will require you to have to Beetle to access it. The Masteries, Wrecking Ball, Barrier Smash and Big Air have specific uses in the near future.

That’d be great and I hope its true… and in I hope in the near future doesn’t mean in the next 2-4 months.

There is absolutely no way that new beetle content will be added before the next Living Story, and even beyond that, there is absolutely no chance that the beetle will offer you more than a few shortcuts.

No content will be gated behind the hefty requirement of another living story chapter, along multiple collections and masteries.
Could be another festival race with rental mounts in the works, though.

They are awesome for people without SSDs, where waypointing is slow.

They are awesome for larger / new maps or first time exploration (seriously, map completion is much faster on these than even on a griffon)

And of course they are heaps of fun to use if you don’t let them lose speed :)

Haven’t done it myself, but I’ve seen people in racing competitions in multiple zones.
