Guild Wars 2’s devs had way too much fun making the roller beetle mount

It’s Guild Wars 2’s most unusual mount yet — scratch that, the most unusual mount of most any MMORPG yet. And as players cruise with their brand-new roller beetles this week, no doubt many of them are thinking both “I’m going to die!” and “What were the developers thinking when they decided to take a rolling bug and turn it into a mount?”

To address the second point there, ArenaNet put out a video in which it discussed the formation of the mount and how it uses momentum and speed to do its crazy tricks.

“We had this thought of having the roller beetle be this fast dirt bike or something,” the dev team said. “Ramp off things, whee, flying in the air! It’s a fun, different type of movement.”
