Camelot Unchained’s beta is indeed launching today at noon

It’s happpppeeennning! City State Entertainment’s Mark Jacobs told us last night that the beta one for his RvR MMORPG Camelot Unchained’s will indeed begin today at noon.

MMO vets will recall that this particular beta was originally meant to launch several years ago, but the studio pushed it off; along the way, it secured more investment, opened a second studio, hired more programmers, and refactored large chunks of its ability system. The beta date was then set for the 4th of July, but it was delayed a few extra weeks because developers needed to clean up remaining bugs to eliminate a client crash rate that was, in their words, “too damn high.” The July 31st beta date was contingent on this weekend’s testing, which was apparently a success.

Do note that this is a real beta, not early access shenanigans, and there is still an NDA. Existing testers are probably going to find that not much changes for them.

“As usual, we thank you for your patience and support to date, and for the patience and support still to come,” Jacobs told backers. “Over the remainder of the development process we both seek and need your help to get us through Beta 1.” The studio is expected to stream this morning before noon.

Final update for me:

1) Web API server has performed great after earlier patch.

2) Chat server has performed great since 8PM patch.

3) No game crashes since we opened the doors to Beta 1. Performance in-line with what we expected.

Goodnight all!

Time to reinstall the client. It’s been a while for me. Things are getting interesting now though :)

Just played a bit… I’m not sure whether we’re allowed to say anything so I’ll just say this: Wow, it certainly has come a long way since the alpha version I played for a while.

I just checked, that was in 2015 :O I didn’t realize it had been that long. Oh well.

How do the graphics look? Because the game has been in development so long, I’m just wondering if what might have looked okay however long ago is starting to look decidedly dated at this point. I mean, the graphics aren’t the most important thing to me, but I don’t want to feel like I’m looking at another DAoC when the game finally releases. ;)

You won’t feel that way, promise and you know I don’t make many promises. :)

Update #2 – New server configuration for Web API server. Changes to chat server in as well. Performance during CSE testing looking good, reopening servers in a few minutes. Total downtime less than 30 minutes.

Game working well for a beta launch. Crafted my own cloak, played and won in the scenarios. All was fun. Other than chat issues and inventory slowdowns. Not bad at all.

Now I am looking forward to building, siege and destructibility. :)

Let me know if you jump back in tonight. The new version looks like nice improvements to chat and Web API servers.

Update #1 – The Web API server is giving us a hard time as we feared it might (which is why we tried to get as many people as possible to log in over the weekend). We’ve got a new version going up now that may improve things with it.

Mark – what does on have to do to be a part of the beta? I have been a casual observer so far, but now that you are getting into the finishing end of things I would love to find some time to get in before launch and look under the hood.

I signed up on your website and will keep watching the progress for sure…. very excited!

Please, please, please don’t donate yet if you are looking for a game that is in “the finishing end of things” because we certainly are not there yet. As we’ve been talking about since January, we are targeting release for the end of next year. We have a long way to go before we get into Beta 3 (which I would describe as you did) so you might want to wait till then. Beta 1 is for folks who want an “old school” Beta 1 experience, with all the fun and frustration that comes with that.

It’s not that I don’t want more folks to join us, I just want folks who are looking to be part of our kind of Beta 1, not the more recent variants that we’ve been seeing for the last few years.

I thank you very much for your interest and I hope that one day you like what you see enough to sign up. But if not, no worries at all!

For those interested in how Beta 1 Launch Day is going:

CURRENT STATUS
1) Servers up and running, we’ve peaked at 550 concurrent so far.
2) Game is running fine, scenarios are running fine, open world, building/crafting working fine
3) Patcher Chat/In-game chat not working fine. It’s overloaded and has blown up. We’ve been planning to replace it with Discord for months. This will happen in Beta 1.

We’ve got a couple of band-aids going in now, fixes in the works for the chat issue.

For a Beta 1 launch day, not too bad. Not perfect, but not too bad.

Updates to follow!

-Mark

Yep, this is only Beta 1. We have a long way to go before Open Beta. :)
