Star Citizen kicks off a free-fly event next week, welcoming non-backers to play over Thanksgiving

Oh yeah, you know a big holiday is coming up when every single game, even the ones deep in alpha, are cranking out demos and free-to-play events. Star Citizen is no different: It’s running a free-fly period starting on Black Friday next week and running to the end of November.

“From Nov 23 through Dec 1 you’ll have the chance to try out every flyable ship and operable vehicle in the game for free. Here’s how it works: During the promotion, anyone can join Star Citizen’s Persistent Universe for free. You’ll be able to experience Star Citizen first-hand, but to get out there and start exploring, you’re gonna need a ship. Starting on November 23rd, every day, a different ship manufacturer in the game will make its entire flyable fleet available for a 24-hour test flight period.”

Naturally, Cloud Imperium is hinting at “surprises in store” for free-fly folks who head to Lorville, the fleshing-out of which just so happens to be the core subject of this week’s Around the Verse too.

so the biggest oddity of star citizen’s control scheme is the interaction menu –

so here’s a run down for all you newbs and returning early backers –

hold F and move your cursor around. when something highlights yellow it means it’s interactable but you’re not close enough or focused on something else that is interactable or not cursored over the object in the correct places

orange means the object is correctly highlighted – many things will automatically respond to a set command if you click on it like this – stuff like opening a door or getting inside your cockpit.

many things will need to have the specific text highlighted. stuff like stowing your gun or powering up your ship.

it takes a bit of getting used to but now i almost miss it when i play other games tbqh.

F looking can also be used to look around your surroundings while flying in a pinch without using Z look. you can also zoom in by using your scroll wheel.

Allow me to add something I just found out. If you’re in a group and want to set the default chat window to group (instead of local/global) just hit enter and then the tab key to switch to your group chat.

Nice, I should take advantage of this. I’m a backer, but only on lowest level. So being able to try out all vehicles is a good opportunity. Also good timing to try out the new graphics card I got a few weeks ago.

EDIT: actually, while writing this, I realize that probably my CPU/RAM is too low (i5 4430, 8GB).

yeah the ram thing is the barrier still tho the game runs alot better for 16gb users now. but still it needs that extra space still.

I will certainly give it a try again . Last time I tried it ( earlier this year ) on such an event I found it virtually unplayable but videos placed on these forums by players have looked nice .

I remain very sceptical about the game for a number of reasons , pay to win ( my own personal definition is certainly in question with ships beings sold in the way they are ) and development delays but those who support this game in a positive rather than argumentative attitude have made me interested in seeing what it is like now .

I hope I am more impressed than last time around .

how long ago did you play? 3.0 was a mess. 3.1 was a big improvement. 3.2 a better improvement. i’d say wait for 3.3.5 to drop and giver another go if you’ve got the ram.

some people believe that the free fly week will start with 3.3.5 dropping to “live”. so check it out!

I have a feeling it was 3.0 but I am not one hundred percent sure .

I am playing on a nvidea 1080 with 16gb ram so it should be ok I imagine .

Will be interesting to see

i have some friends that are having issues currently/recently with good hardware specs. sometimes it’s just fickle and doesn’t like you.

Highly recommend taking advantage of this. This lets your see the game (warts and all) without the filter of what others think.

If they don’t stay in alpha for like 8 years are we really going to be getting the product they promised? I say ten year minimum alpha and we’ll all get the game of our dreams!

heh i didn’t notice that’s where the video chose to preview in emebds. good spot lol.

loreville is pretty but not terribly interesting in terms of lay out. it’s also clearly not los santos like some people chose to convince themselves. if you expected a large open world city i’m sorry but that’s just not what loreville is.

rumour has it this ptu will be relatively short and launch to live shortly before the free fly week.

also if you are like so many mmo players curious if you can swim in the seas and lakes of hurston, make sure to check out the video which answers that question specifically! :D (yes that is clickbait, and you won’t believe #7!)

i’m curious to see if they will get some of the stuff in the 335 demo from citcon in by the time it goes live but for now i’m relaxing on sc to focus on sc ahead of the anniversary sale and 335 going live.

Any known ETA on logging in where you left off (eg: CTD, log back in where you were instead of back at Olisar, or w/e)? I’m not even sure what the name of that feature would be. :)

Flew a few missions the other night, which was a bit more stable that it was over the weekend, so I’m guessing whatever issues they had have been resolved. I still ran into a few lost connections, but I got an hour or two of solid gameplay in. Its still buggy, like having a ship that you can’t interact with, or having all interaction break forcing a re-log, or spawning a ship with no doors; but when the stars align and everything works, its quite enjoyable and relaxing.

there’s a system fo rcrash recovery now. i think that was what was holding up 3.3 ptu near the end actually.

idk how solid it is now but aside from teh bugs in ptu it did work more or less. as does logging out in a bed somewhere (use the interaction prompt while laying in bed to log out)

when you spawn ships with no doors or won’t interact you need to reclaim them at the ship kiosks. it’s funny bc that bug wasn’t in game for most of 3.3 ptu but came back near the end after beign my bane throughout 3.2.2
