New MMO Starbase pretty much sounds like EverQuest Next in space plus robots

Finnish developer Frozenbyte just dropped a brand-new MMO on the Steam store: It’s called Starbase, and it’s set to launch into early access “later in 2019.” And yes, they’re very definitely calling it a “massively multiplayer online game with gameplay focused on building and designing spaceships and stations, exploration, resource gathering, crafting, trading, and combat.” Wheeeee!

“Starbase is an MMO with a fully destructible environment and a multitude of fine-detailed simulations that allow you, the players, the ultimate freedom to conquer space and unleash your creativity. Set in a universe of huge scale and detail, the fully-destructible environment and the hybrid of voxel and vertex-based game mechanics enable simulations in the game at immense depth. […] The scale and depth of the simulation in all aspects of the game gives you the ultimate freedom to use your innovativeness and creativity – the building blocks of success in Starbase. From constructing single spaceships with durable outer platings to creating massive automated factories and designing electricity and data networks, you are free to do it your way.”

Did I mention you get to be a robot? Because you get to be a robot. This looks like one to watch, folks.

Sadly, I’ve no interest in hard sci-fi settings (Star Wars is fine, anything beyond that and I’m bored) or being a robot.

Our Heavenly Father, we beseech thee to free us from the yoke and burden of “PvP sandbox”. These infidels have defiled the purity of our sanctity and done what is wicked in thine sight. Verily, their cup runneth over, and we fear the evil of gank when we walk through the valley of the shadow of their laziness or inability to create PvE content. And we shall dwell in the house of the Nope all the days of our lives, until the world without end ends. Ayyyymen. :-/

Like any early access mmorpg ,game if its still around in three or four years after its first announced and is moving forward nicely , then it might be something I may invest a few quid into as I did with Project Gorgon . There are just so many these days and I have my doubts that even half of them will make it to release .

Ship and FPS combat looks decent but the robot’s are not appealing. Would much rather have had humanoid player characters.

Well, if we really NEED combat and killing in every game, let’s at least kill bots, not humans.

Looks pretty incredible. Looks good enough that every time a cool thing was shown I found myself asking “…but how??” or assume the actual game experience will just be a laggy mess. I want to know what objects are voxels and what are vertices because some the level of detail the game rendered on distant parts of the space stations and stuff seemed too good for all the voxel engines I’ve seen.

Anyway, it is about dang time someone (even if it is not this game) does something amazing with voxels again. If this ends up just being a gankbox I might not want to play it, but I can still respect the tech if they pull it off :P

A lot of info about DU is under NDA or just not available, but DU doesn’t seem to be have as much amazing detail in the construction/destruction of voxel-things. DU also isn’t a true shooter. From what I can tell it has some kind of lock on targeting system like EVE which is fine with me. That still sounds like a concession they made to deal with the problems that large scale MMOs run into with free aim. We’ve barely seen anything on Starbase, so I feel like there have to be limitations to things that the first trailer isn’t showing yet.

DU also still seems like a long ways away to me. I bet Frozenbyte can get Starbase out pretty quick (dunno if it will be any good of course).

I was getting Landmark in space (with EVE spice on top) more than EqNext in space.
Looks very interesting though. Both EqNext and Landmark were great concepts, we only need someone competent to make it happen..

Crowfall and Starbase. Two MMOs that pique my interest but have too much potential for PvP griefing to give serious consideration.

Sorry but empyrion galactic survival looks like a much funner game and has been in development for years and is light-years ahead of this ea game. Pass for me

Not entirely sure I make the EQ Next similarity connection??? I mean didn’t EQ Next plan to have story, quests, races, classes, factions.. you know actual PVE content and immersive elements? Whereas this is just literally a big sandbox of nothing except space to build whatever..there doesn’t seem to be anything else to it from what they are showing so far. I mean explore what for example??? resources seems to be the only thing TO find.

Still it is still in development it may show actual content at some point and then it may be worth the MMO title, but atm it is bare bones at best and lacks cohesion elements to give anything meaning.

Yeah it pretty much looks like a space sandbox title to me, i dont see the similarity to EQNext either.
