There are plenty of ways for MMOs to set a scene. Visuals are certainly one of the more important, but audio plays just as big of a factor, whether its the environmental soundscape or the background music — heck, we have a whole column devoted to MMO music. The latest shared footage from Soulbound Studio recorded within the “PrElyria” pre-alpha build of Chronicles of Elyria is all about sound design, specifically of a wetlands location.
“Sound design in Chronicles of Elyria will be based on your actual surroundings, not just a track that loops in a particular zone,” states the video’s blurb. “Animals, weather, and even the area you are exploring can all be a factor into what you hear. That way, you can react appropriately to sounds you hear and let the music enhance the action.” Some of those “appropriate” sounds shown off in the video include birds, a campfire, and material-specific footfall noises. The water is suspiciously quiet, though.
It’s a short video at 1:40 — the first 16 seconds of which are a black screen — but you can get your eyes and ears full below. Just remember, it’s pre-alpha, all material subject to change, yadda yadda yadda.
