Rumor: A complete overhaul is in the works for Anthem

...huh.

So, you know how Anthem scaled back its content updates and seems to have started moving into quiet acceptance of being at a dead end? Well, the rumor mill is now working to suggest something far less lethal in the game’s future. A report from Kotaku claims that sources within Bioware confirms the developer is in the midst of working on a reboot of the game behind closed door, with names being floated such as Anthem 2.0 or Anthem Next.

Why you wouldn’t just use Anthem: Second Verse when it’s right there seems inexplicable, but hey, rumors.

The story claims that many parts of the project are in flux, including how things will be released to players, whether a rolling series of upgrades a la No Man’s Sky or a major update like Destiny: The Taken King, or even an entirely new title (although the rumor claims existing players will not need to re-buy the game). If you’ve been hoping that the game will pull things together, it’s certainly a pleasant sort of rumor; time will tell whether it’s true or not.

Honestly I hope so. The game has/had a ton of potential and aspects of the game are good. I’d buy the game if they redid it and it lived up to it’s potential.

I can easily imagine a successful Anthem rework done by EA if they move the development to Respawn and cut Bioware from it completely. Otherwise it’s doomed from the start.

I would like to be proved wrong but I have my doubts if it will be anything like the FF14 revamp. I’m thinking SWL at best.

Given EA’s reputation I’m reminded of that old camp song…

“Second verse, same as the first, li’l bit louder and a li’l bit worse.”

Personally, I’m up for trying it. Because: the basic setup is something I’m not necessarily opposed to, they need to repair reputation badly, and I’m working again so may be able to replace my PC/its parts within months. But in a time of when overhauls can mean actually largely fixing the game and beyond (No Man’s Sky, FFXIV, Rainbow Six Siege? etc), I have doubts EA will approve something that goes further than making for 2020 the minimum product that Anthem should have been in *early 2019*. Even DAI patches and DLC just plugged in the gaps (mostly well done though, aside from withholding DLC from earlier gen consoles), and even MEA just patched in some of the biggest holes with the barest fabric. Anthem should be treated as do-or-die, but I don’t know yet if Bioware is taking it that seriously.

I just selfishly wish they would drop it and focused on something I actually want to play. Meanwhile, Dragon Age not sooner than 2022 and Mass Effect… ?!?! Yeah, I have really slim hopes to see any Dragon Age and Mass Effect ever again, to be honest.

I kind of expected DA4 2022 but that year was really on the fringes of my expectation. Still hoping its 2021. I can forgive not 2020 because they want to gear towards next gen consoles as much as they can manage. Yeah, I’m worried that any Mass Effect won’t even come early 2020s, but mid 2020s at best..

DAI was BioWare’s best selling game ever, so DA4 should be pretty certain. The question is, who is left to make it, as their leads keep leaving.

Mass Effect is probably in the early stages of trying to figure out how to bring Shepard back. As I doubt they won’t do another ME game, but its probably going to recon stuff.

Shooter MMOs have never done extremly well, not on the level Anthem is hoping.
Warframe is about as big as shooter MMOs get. A bit of Destiny but thats it.

Edit: oh how could i forget Division, so maybe if they get ALL the players on the new Anthem

What the hell are you talking about? Destiny is literally one of the biggest games on Steam right now. Warframe is in the top 10. And we don’t know the stats for Division 2 as it’s not on Steam. Anthem it self also started out super strong and failed because it didn’t deliver the content needed to maintain the playerbase.

These games are massively successful if they work.

Prior to CODs launch, Destiny 2 was the best selling FPS of the year. Which isn’t bad for a game that came out last year.

They can call it Anthem: A Realm Reborn as a subtle wink towards where they got inspiration from.

Im also for Anthem: Part 2. It’d make a sweet Blink 182 reference.

Err… Don’t mess with me, Eliot! I need this! And you are pressing all the right buttons. I might just start buying from the Anthem cash shop if this is true. Lol!

Ok, ok. Maybe not. Heh.

So, the only thing that I will accept at this point is a reboot ala Square Enix style. Why? The game is broken in large part because of bad design decisions. And this happened because there was a rush to market. A year and a half prior to release they had NOTHING!

And I’m supposed to trust these devs? I agree with @3dom down below. This is likely a marketing scheme to shore up a few dollars from the holiday season.

I’m sorry but I’m posting this again. This game has so much potential it makes me sick when I think of the current situation.
