CIG’s Articles of Association reveal a partnership that might mean VR for Star Citizen or console launch for Squadron 42

A poster on the Star Citizen subreddit has played an intriguing game of connect the dots that might mean some interesting things for the game’s future, assuming suppositions are correct.

It all starts with CIG’s Resolution of Articles of Association posted on February 11th, specifically page 11, which lists VGDC Lienholding LLC among the companies that are part of CIG’s US group.

This particular LLC is a new name in the list of US companies, and so the redditor traced the company back to a loan charge made two years ago to a Manchester, UK, company known as Icesprite. Icesprite, in turn, is owned by Firesprite, which is a gamedev studio in Liverpool, UK, that has made a VR game known as The Persistence as well as other games like the PS4 game The Playroom as well as a VR version for PSVR. The thread continues toward a list of over 140 partners that are working on games for the Xbox X including Firesprite.

So what does this ultimately mean for Star Citizen? One can certainly offer up all sorts of speculation, but the redditor posits three different outcomes of this association between CIG and Firesprite: Firesprite is working on tools for CIG that relate to VR functionality; Firesprite is working on a console release for Squadron 42; or Firesprite will bring the multiplayer mode Theaters of War as a standalone console release.

Of course, all of this could come to ultimately nothing, but it is a fascinating trail to follow.

Squadron 42 on console would make a lot of sense. Especially as the new consoles look up to the challenge of running it. It’s an untapped market, with new money, and as the present SQ42 plan has the game divvied up into thirds, it allows for instant sequelitis.

Given that there are real investors in CIG now, there may be a push for profits beyond the Roberts vanity plan.

Hate to say it but didn’t dust 514 already try and fail at this?

Console players aren’t really tactical team oriented in general. The fps elements could draw some ps2 players but you gotta do more than look pretty. All show and no stay won’t work.

I’m just referencing the long promised single player game Squadron 42, not Star Citizen proper. Don’t know enough about the console mutli-space to have an informed opinion about SC on it.

@Jon anyone who have played Wing Commanders know it fit totally console gameplay and SQ42 like SC can be played with gamepad: Interaction with mo-capped actors, selection menus and actions.
SQ42 is not tactical but close to action focus only, either with ships and now fps being part of SQ42/SC.

New consoles are more than capable to handle 4K like graphics which was the single limitation as developers can now make PC visual from start rather than focus on console hardware limitation then try to port it to PC’s.

Pretty sure they’re just working on a real world Ready Player One at this point.

If I recall that was set 30 years into our future .

Yep you might be right ;)

So – a redditor is making huge assumptions…you KNOW what they was when you assume…right?

I’ll be surprised if they ever squeeze the “MMO” side of Star Citizen onto the consoles – and it’s so far away from being ready for prime time that it’s not really going to happen on the about-to-be-released generation even if it’s feasible technically. It’s just not close to a complete product yet, and it won’t be an option on consoles until it is.

But Squadron 42, and/or Theaters of War? The first seems entirely plausible on the next-gen consoles, and there’s no reason not to do the latter if it’s a great game. The capabilities of either of the next-gen consoles are more than up to the task.

Of course, Squadron isn’t done yet, and probably isn’t going to be done this year.
And there’s yet to be any evidence that Theaters of War will be polished enough to be a standalone game – the potential is there, but going from “cool mode in Star Citizen to test out and tune combined-arms combat” to “Genuine AAA Console game” isn’t a trivial step.

Be interesting to see what happens though.

Ps5 life cycle be done before sc?

SC is the MMO part. As such it is supposed to last several PlayStation average life cycle of 5 years: P5, P6 and who knows P7 :)

Now that the next gen of consoles are running entirely on SSD tech that is actually better than current SSDs on PC, I can easily see one of these new consoles running Star Citizen. The stringent quality control of MIcrosoft and Sony though preclude that happening until it’s running at a certain standard that it isn’t even close to right now.

The VR thing makes the most sense as it was abacker funded stretch goal that was hit. I hope all of the console stuff happens and that it’s all cross play with PC. Star Citizen needs a HUGE playerbase to be what we all want it to be.

Shit, if this goes to consoles there should be an amusing shitstorm, especially from the “THERE IS NO WAY PEASANT CONSOLES COULD EVER EVEN DREAM OF RUNNING THIS GAME!”

At least it’s an outside studio, but all of this just seems like it’ll add more time and budget onto an already extremely bloated game that’s way behind schedule and with a development budget that makes AAA games cry.

Biggest challenge of running SC on a console is not the graphics, it’s going to be mapping the 500 key binds to a controller. I imagine it’s the same reason you don’t see WoW on consoles.

Challenge accepted :) … FFIV runs on PS4 without controller. You can play keyboard/mouse. Pretty much any modern day MMO should be usable on a console. I honestly dont understand why WoW hasnt ported yet .. a much larger audience.

They got STO on consoles, and the interface isn’t bad – it’s actually pretty good. And if they can get that on a console, they can get anything. :)

On the PC STO has more buttons/commands/widgets for me than any other game I even think about playing. It certainly won’t be trivial, but especially if they limit things to Squadron 42 and/or Theaters of War, I think it should be fine.

A lot of SC’s commands have more “console-friendly” alternatives, and the new interaction-wheel that lets you change what’s bound to what action without digging through the options screens would work very nicely to customize a controller’s button-mapping.

I think getting Squadron 42 finished is likely to be a bigger challenge than adapting it to the next-gen controllers and hardware. :)

You do not see WoW on consoles because Activision Blizzard is too greedy and could not agree on pricing with Sony and MS. FFXIV runs on PS4 and runs well and has a full support for keyboard and mouse. Any game is allowed to add support for keyboard and mouse on both consoles. Some developers just choose not to support it.

Well Blizzard managed to figure out their greed with Overwatch which is on PS4 and Xbox, so there goes that theory.

The machines might handle it but if it requires teamwork, any tactical mindset at all, any real skill tree and competently balanced wraps, naw, majority of crowd ain’t trying to hear that. Some of us old clan gamers might but if progression is grinding, that’s a meh. Be a hard sell on console

CR himself said SQ42 may be available on console. SQ42 not SC. SQ42 is a solo gameplay and may or may have not coop with a friend or two, something many games do have already on console.

Sony and Microsoft would be more than happy to have an ambitious space game to increase their revenues and as a PC backer, I would be more than happy: more cash equal more features, contents and gameplay for SC :)

If it’s sp, yeah it’ll sell but thought it was a mmo thing, only seen limited vids of it, still unclear
