The Daily Grind: What MMO has the best login screen?

You might think this is a trivial thing, but I heartily disagree, and all I have to do is point to a login screen I don’t love to explain why: LOTRO’s. Even once you get past the gotta-put-your-password-in-every-time launcher, the login screen is fairly static. It was built before you could have so many characters per account, so half your characters are hidden behind a clicky button. MOP reader Warroth has kindly pointed out to me that the innocuous little arrow button allows us to sort our toons on the fly, but I would prefer more control.

It’s far from the worst login screen ever, of course, but I definitely wish it could get a bit of a quality-of-life facelift. I love how you can permanently move your toons around in their list in World of Warcraft without the need to sort.

What MMO would you say has the best login screen?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

I’m fond of STO’s. It shows me and my bridge crew, there’s always a dramatic zoom-in, and they update it with every major patch.

Phantasy Star Online’s will always be memorable because there was some basic degree of interaction. One loading screen let you move around the sparkly ball that was in the center of the screen, another let you sort of control the direction or color of the hoops I think? And another let you change the color on a monitor thing.

So not so much the login screen, but something funny I noticed after the 5.3.1 patch on FFXIV. So now if you’re on the Shadowbringers theme screen where it says Start, Data Center, Movies & Title, etc, if you watch one of the previous expansion’s preview movies, it changes the theme screen to match afterwards. It’s not a big thing but I thought it was a neat touch. It’s too bad it doesn’t seem to stay permanently. The Shadowbringers theme screen is so LOUD.

I don’t have a good answer otherwise, I really dig how WAR did it now that others have mentioned it. All your doods having a house-party is the most excellent.

Ooh, forgot good old Warhammer. I loved the way you got to see your entire cast of characters, all throwing shapes.

I forgot about this one too and man it is so good. Getting some nostalgia vibes too. May log in for some comfort gaming.

I like the way the GW2 one, if left alone, fades the UI out and just leaves your character looking all windswept and interesting.

Any login screen that allows me to change my preferred theme through expansions (so, almost none of them). I don’t necessarily need the changing titles, but if I’m say, questing in Northrend for a while, it’d be nice to get into that atmosphere immediately.

I used to love the old EVE login screens. Each expansion had a unique animated background with new music, and it felt like a great introduction to your session whenever the music started. I swear i had these screens on long loops as ambient music when studying.

For flashy, I would say TERA and B&S. If you don’t mind waiting 10 minutes plus to get into the actual games… /sigh
