The Daily Grind: What aborted MMORPG do you wish had seen the light of day?

So who remembers the Nintendo “gigaleak”? Probably no one, since it got covered back in July, which in 2020 measurements was at least five years ago. But one of the interesting bits about it was the 2004 proposal for a Pokemon MMO, which if it had ever happened would’ve probably come out in that weird post-WoW era in the mid-to-late aughts.

I’m not a Pokemon person, so losing out on this MMORPG doesn’t hit me in the gut, but there have been MMOs that were canceled before completion that I am sad about. Imperator Online – a Mythic MMO that was canceled in between Dark Age of Camelot and Warhammer Online – was always one that I was interested in. At least it would’ve been a unique setting for the genre! I always pine for the long-lost Ultima X Odyssey too – I loved its art style and mechanics.

How about you? What aborted MMORPG do you wish had seen the light of day?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

It wasn’t really an “MMO” but I really wanted the cancelled Chromehounds :/

World of Darkness. The anguish from its cancellation still afflicts my sensibilities, as if it were yesterday.

Hero’s Song, the MMO that John Smedley’s company Pixelimage was building before Amazon more or less bought the company. I just wish he’d open sourced it before mailing everyone money back.

I enjoyed Hero’s Song a lot. I kept it installed from Steam until I had to replace my PC. I really wish that had gotten off the ground.

A scifi mmo from Blizzard? Yes, please. If only for the cinematics.

This one : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stargate_Worlds

Because I loved that series. Some person essentially funneled all the money to his company and then ran for the hills…and it went under. The wiki is curiously void of this information and instead blames it on the recession.

Just the amount of endless worlds you could have created at the other side of a portal (Think teleporter pad, but upright that you walk through that has nigh on infinite destinations…), with a rich story behind it all…

What a loss. (Though the series of the same name was pretty good…it also ended prematurely.)

The beta was in pretty bad but if the concept had been realized by another company, it could have been awesome.

Did you actually get to try something from it?

All I ever got to see was some janky looking first attempt at character models and the website where you could hover over the lock in plates and get the sound from the show, and I came back to that website many a time and just fiddled with those for a bit hoping for more info to come out.

Only read about it failing later through some fan stuff somewhere/learned the backstory of that guy basically stealing all their funding and them having to abandon it.

So yeah, I imagine if someone else had tried, it might’ve given us something…

Beat me to it. I was going to post the same thing. it seems like a natural for an MMO.

Others apparently beat me to commenting on it down below, but I didn’t want to rescind my comment.

Yeah, it did have all sorts of hopes and dreams and exploration and just…pure wonder as an option there…along with the possibility of combat and other stuff. (Replicators vs Asgard!)

Not sure they could manage to achieve what the show did, with all the various personalisation of each of the characters though.

I would have said Marvel Online, but as that became Champions Online I think its safe to say I get why MARVEL went Heck no and jumped ship.

So I’ll go with Fallout MMO instead.. silly legal battles killed it dead :(

Top of the list: EverQuest Next.

Others include StarGate Worlds, Ultima Online 2 (aka Ultima Worlds Online: Origin), True Fantasy Live Online and World of Darkness.

And in theory, Project Copernicus.
