The Daily Grind: Do incoherent art styles in MMOs bother you?

My husband was playing SMITE the other day and showed me a new skin for Aphrodite that is super cute and cartoony (and I think she’s so cute!) – but it also looks super out of place in the game. What I mean is that Hi-Rez has advanced well past the fun absurdity of putting cyberpunk toons and Bob Ross in as skins; lately it’s trying to break your brain by putting in character models in completely different art styles, not just themes – like these cel-shaded chibi cartoons, or the low-poly RuneScape crossover, which don’t actually mesh with the existing style of the world (assuming you even think it has a set style now!).

I think she’s super cute, and I’m certainly more forgiving of weird stuff like this in non-MMORPGs like SMITE. But what about in actual MMOs? Do incoherent art styles in MMOs bother you? Is this a dealbreaker?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!
