We certainly hope that players of Battlefield 2042 are enjoying last month’s Season 7 launch because it’s going to be the last: Dice has officially announced that Season 7 marks the official end of seasonal content, with updates coming in the form of new in-game challenges, events, modes, and ongoing maintenance after Season 7 wraps up.
The reason for the maintenance moding of the FPS is simply a matter of Dice and affiliated studios looking ahead to the next entry in the Battlefield series, which will also include Motive, a studio most well-known for remasters of Dead Space and Star Wars: Squadrons. Naturally details of this next game are thin, but the post promises “a Battlefield universe across connected multiplayer experiences and single-player.”
“We know this news may be disappointing. However, as we looked at what the future of the series required, it became clear it was time for us to shift our resources and focus to be fully dedicated to what comes next,” writes series general manager Byron Beede. “As I’ve mentioned in previous updates, we have an ambitious vision to embrace and unlock the vast potential of the series’ class-based squadplay and immersive, intense battles.”
Regular readers likely know that the life cycle of BF2042 has been a tumultuous one, with problems that sprang up immediately during its 2021 launch and persisted into 2022, which saw gamers demanding refunds, a tanking player count, and players fleeing the new title for an old one instead. EA noted that sales for the shooter didn’t meet expectations for that fiscal year, while Dice pushed back against “skeleton crew” staffing rumors and tried to assure fans that it was in it for the long haul; whether three years of updates that are effectively ending constitutes a long haul is up to gamers to decide.
