Rumor: Bungie is (or at least was?) supposedly working on Destiny 3

According to reporting on multiple websites this morning, Bungie wasn’t just blowing hot air during yesterday’s The Final Shape stream when the studio’s Luke Smith vowed the team had big plans for the Destiny IP after this last expansion.

TheGamePost and Forbes point to a supposed leaker from this past winter, who posted a comment on Reddit with several rumors. The first was that Bungie was working on a “system called prism that will allow players to mix and match abilities from different subclasses.” The second was that Bungie is (or maybe just was) working on Destiny 3 under the codename “Payback,” whose key difference would be the dissolution of character classes.

It doesn’t seem like the rumor impressed anyone until last night, when Bungie announced the Prismatic subclass, which literally offers “new options to enhance and customize each playstyle with the combination of multiple element types.” Now that the first part of the leak has been proven pretty accurate, the fanbase is hoping the second part has some legs too.

The leaker has been posting again after his comments went belatedly viral; his other comments suggest he got his info from former Bungie devs – not surprising, given how many have been laid off – that it was trans devs at Bungie who went to bat for the character editing system, and that gamers shouldn’t necessarily read too much into the name “Payback” as he understood the term to relate to Bungie’s effort, not in-game storytelling.

Either way, take the rumors with a whole salt lick, but it wouldn’t really be a bad thing to learn D3 is happening, given the chaos Bungie has been through under Sony. Of course, it also wouldn’t be shocking to learn it was under development prior to the layoffs and that Sony had nixed it, hence the Prismatic subclass. Let’s hope for the former.
