After a lengthy period of silence, the team behind indie RTS Immortal: Gates of Pyre has announced a playtest on Steam for August 2nd through 4th, with signups available on the official website now.
The announcement is a bit light on details, such as whether sign-up guarantees entry or what content will be included in the test. One can assume that 1v1 competitive play will be included at the very least, and studio Sunspear Games has previously promised co-operative game modes, so hopefully those might appear in some form as well.
Immortal is also now available to wishlist on Steam, though no release date is given.
Readers will recall that Immortal: Gates of Pyre is one of several upcoming StarCraft II spiritual successors. It features a striking science fantasy art style and what appears to be some very deep and original world-building, with gameplay features including simplified economic mechanics for greater accessibility and the titular immortals, which are not hero units but provide different twists on the core gameplay of their respective factions. The Steam page promises three playable factions in the finished game – fewer than what was originally announced, perhaps a wise decision in light of developer Sunspear Games’ limited resources.
The start of August is going to be a busy time for RTS fans, as fellow SC2 spiritual successor Stormgate will be offering early entry to its early access for beta testers and founder’s pack buyers from July 30th to August 12th, after which it will be available free to play to the general public.
