Star Citizen is celebrating its ships once again and using that love of internet spacecraft to pitch the game to new money players. The Ship Showdown event is officially underway, which comes along with a full week of free-to-play access for the alpha sandbox.

From now until August 22nd, SC is free to download and play, while the 16 ships that are duking it out for the honor of being named Best in Show (aka Most Cuddled by Players) will also be on hand to fly at no cost during the promotion. Starter packs to fully buy into the game’s promise will also be slightly discounted until August 26th.

In other SC news, the weekly Inside Star Citizen video is continuing its showcase of alpha 4.0’s Pyro system, with a targeted look at its different non-combat settlements and gameplay features. This showcase tries to paint the lawless PvP system as a place that isn’t just about chaos and killing as it highlights farmsteads, scrapyards, and market settlements that provide missions involving fixing items, salvaging, or harvesting.

Longtime MMORPG gamers will know that Star Citizen was originally Kickstarted for over $2M back in 2012 with a planned launch for 2014. As of 2024, it still lingers in an incomplete but playable alpha, having raised over $700M from gamers over years of continuing crowdfunding and sales of in-game ships and other assets. It is currently the highest-crowdfunded video game ever and has endured both indefatigable loyalty from advocates and immense skepticism from critics. A co-developed single-player title, Squadron 42, has also been repeatedly delayed.
