Star Citizen’s has long promised players the chance to become an engineer aboard a starship along the “road to 4.0” that CIG has been taking as it heralded the gameplay features arriving to the new build. Unfortunately it looks as if that can is being kicked down the road by the studio, as its latest roadmap roundup post confirmed engineering won’t make 4.0 after all.
“Upon review of the support required for server meshing, Pyro, and general stability of 4.0, we made the choice to temporarily remove several deliverables,” the studio explains. Those include every portion of engineering that was previously showcased, along with things like charge and drain, fire and fire extinguishers, switching life support on and off, and the refactor of trams. These features are planned for an incremental patch once CIG has a better idea of when they can be added.
“We’re aware that many of you are looking forward to these features, especially engineering gameplay, but rest assured that we’re committed to pulling these back in as soon as possible,” the post reads. And indeed replies to the news do reek of disappointment. “It’s like expectation limbo,” reads one such reply. “The expectations are so low and yet I am constantly disappointed.”
CIG tries to argue that it’s not all bad news, as several alpha 4.0 features will move forward into alpha 3.24.2 like updated vehicle MFDs and HUDs, additional customization for characters, and updates to the multi-tool. However, if you were dreaming of being Scotty in the ‘Verse, you’re going to have to hold your horses.
