Amazon is pulling out all the stops on its New World Aeternum launch on October 15th. Last night, the studio partially detailed its plans for launch festivities, which include a three-week promotional event called Trials of Aeternum. There’s loot in it for you. Some of you, anyway.
“In pursuit of rumored riches, you’ll join forces with your fellow PC, PlayStation 5, or Xbox Series X|S Adventurers and turn weekly achievements into highly coveted, exclusive rewards themed around the foundations of Aeternum,” the studio says. “This 3-week-long event will feature themed challenges designed to guide your team through the supernatural secrets, threats, and fortunes lurking across Aeternum. As you grow in power, you can track your team’s challenges, progress, and hard-earned spoils on the dedicated Trials of Aeternum page.”
Now, the dev blog doesn’t actually say what the challenges are, only that they’ll be revealed each week starting on October 15th. It does include a rundown of all the skins and tokens you’ll be getting for participating, however. Redditors have surmised that the event is really just a crossplay promotion with streamers and influencers.
But there’s a big caveat here: Since it’s clearly meant to promote crossplay, you won’t be able to participate if you’ve stayed behind on the legacy servers or if you’re playing on console-only worlds.
“Are Legacy servers eligible to participate in Trials of Aeternum? No. Trials of Aeternum delivers a compelling New World: Aeternum launch experience for new characters from the shores to Shattered Mountain. Only Standard servers across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S can participate in the event.
“Are Standard – Console Only Worlds eligible to participate in Trials of Aeternum? No. Trials of Aeternum brings Adventurers from PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S together through exploration, immersion, and progression toward common goals. All Standard, cross-play servers in any region can participate.”
As we’ve been covering, the “legacy” servers are all of the currently existing PC servers, whereas the “standard” label will apply to the new crossplay servers. There will also be console-only servers for those who want that. The important bit here is that you can transfer from standard to legacy, but not from legacy to standard – which means you’ll have to roll a new character on a new standard server to take part in this promotional event, which makes this effectively another fresh start event – with loot. Cue the grumbling or rejoicing, depending on your view.
