Guild Wars 2 Heart of Thorns’ first elite spec is the Chronomancer

Let’s talk history for a moment. Before Guild Wars 2 was a thing, before it was even an idea, the team at ArenaNet was working on the third Guild Wars standalone campaign. Like its last two predecessors, Guild Wars: Utopia was slated to feature two new classes, one of which was the Chronomancer. It’s taken quite some time since then, and it’s not in the form anyone might have expected, but the Chronomancer has arrived at last as the first Elite Specialization for Heart of Thorns to be catalogued and dissected.

Sure, it took plenty of time, but given the nature of the concept that’s sort of to be expected.

The Chronomancer specialization is, as mentioned, limited to Mesmers, employing a variety of time-based tricks like reversing the events of combat and stopping time as necessary. You can read more on the official blog post detailing the specialization, but if you don’t have the time for that, you can watch the video below to preview what it looks like in action. Better late than never, indeed.

Hm, maybe I should dust off Gw2 after all. Leveled my Guardian main to 80 and a couple of alts to 30-40 but havent even finished the main story quest on my main yet.

i also heard that many things became accountwide now, which i a very nice change.

Glad my main is getting a cool advanced spec. Reminds me of my EQ2 Illusionist.  Still need to level a ranger so I can be a druid though… <3 nature magicccc!

breetoplay TomTurtle  Try Greatsword Mesmer, it is pretty steamrolly. And they can escape so easy in PvE with their illusions and invisibility.

Glad I’m a Mesmer :). Not so much for the gameplay, but the relatively unique theme.

I’m just hoping it releases in time for my birthday, September 5th. If it releases much later than that I’ll be busy again and will have to bunk off to play! :P An August release would fit nicely with the current news flow and what might pan out for E3.

Siphaed nahenway I think you’re right. A few months ago I thought they were about to do a big PR push and shoot for launching at the GW1 anniversary, and then they backed way off and news has been trickling. At this point, I bet they show offsite at E3, show at PAX Prime, and launch in time for the 3rd anniversary in August.

Faction 3 That’s been a big bugbear of mine as well. I love damage-over-time roles in MMOs. I still defiantly play as condition damage Necromancer in open world PvE regardless. Epidemic is so much damn fun.
I assume that Berserker will still be the meta even after these changes, but hopefully condition damage won’t be so far behind. It still lags for shorter PvE engagements where you’re not allowed that ramp-up time, but that’s the nature of the beast.

Well, they removed the Bleed Cap in some Demo map.

https://forum-en.guildwars2.com/forum/game/hot/Increased-Bleeding-Stacks

Something they should’ve done more than 2 goddamn years ago. So that prospect right there helps Necromancers in a major way. The god-awful Condition mechanics were why I bailed on the game in the first place, because that shitty development tragedy pretty much took me out of 3/4 of the content. Can’t do World Bosses (which almost all of the new content is based on (Dry Top, etc), Can’t do Fractals, Can’t do Dungeons, Can’t level properly because Condition Damage used to scale horribly, but no worries, I can still hop around jumping puzzles like a fucking chump and do the boring-ass LS…count me in…

breetoplay Really Livefyre, no notifications, really? Just reading this now. >.<
As said below, Mesmers are reliant on higher level stuff and come off as really slow at first. Heck, even at max level it can feel slow in comparison to other professions much of it having to do with the reliance on the ramp-up time for illusion generation. Even travel is a slog due to lack of baseline movement speed options, which is one thing that they’re considering fixing in the balancing patch. Thank goodness on that.
From my personal observations, Mesmers are not nearly as played as other professions for the aforementioned reasons as well as not necessarily being in the very top PvE meta. In the meta teams on MetaBattle, GW2’s own form of GW1’s PVXwiki, Mesmer doesn’t appear in any of them.
Not that they can’t be brought as they are very useful for reflects, stealth and portals at times. At least they’re not at the very bottom slot that Necromancers occupy right now in PvE. I feel so bad for them right now, and I’m hoping their elite specialization will help in that regard.

nahenway Oh, and guild halls and precusor crafting. I probably forgot something else, too. But not, alas, dungeons.

mosselyn

nahenway I don’t think there are any new dungeons in initial release. At the original announcement, they said they had not held back any significant things coming in the release, and dungeons were not mentioned. I think it’s “just” going to be the new zone, the new professions, the new mastery system, the trait overhaul, and the pvp-stuff-i’ve-already-forgotten.

I could have sworn they showed off large chunks of the maps in their reveal video; you know, the one that ended with dinosaurs. They just showed new creature species in this video.   The reveal of the Hylick species gave a bunch of new locations to view.    Got to demo test the new sPvP map and mode, whole thing revealed.   The WvW map was also walked through the entire thing with in-depth parts about mechanics.    I think the only major thing they haven’t really gone into is Guild Halls.  But, eh.

My feelings on the reveal:

Daaaayamn.

That’s a lot of cool stuff for a class that already has most of the cool stuff in game. What this adds is a lot more positional and space coverage play for Mesmer. They get a whole line of Wells which adds to their AOE output. The Wells look to provide some more group support and buffs that the Mesmer was generally light on outside of its special tricks.

In PVE, the Mesmer remains a special trick class. This just adds a new trick. Alacrity on phantasms might up DPS, as well as alacrity on self. It looks like shield has no phantasm skill? If one skill is that bubble and the other is the wave skill, then that would mean no Phantasms on the weapon. Curious to see if this is true or not.

In PVP, the Mesmer will node control more and probably find ways to do really annoying things that cause forum rage posts.

In WvW, the Mesmer joins area play! And provide some more group buffs. They can also double portal now. Finding a hidden Mesmer will be even more fun when they pop f5, portal, stealth and restealth, then reset back and drop another portal.

breetoplay TheZebes TomTurtle Well I still use Greatsword as my weapon swap, so you can still show off with it!

I leveled a Mesmer at launch and dealt with the issues as they were. Shatters didn’t do much damage. Phantasms died before doing anything. It was a turn-off for a lot of people, but I wasn’t hopping classes.

I have at least 3k hours on Mesmer now. (My badge of shame and pride.) The changes to traits made the previous issues even worse. I was dreading leveling a new Mesmer on the NPE on my second account, but I began trying to play it like how I play my Mesmer when I’m solo roaming in WvWvW: just spamming torment and confusion. Suddenly everything was dying for me in PVE as a level 10-20.

breetoplay TomTurtle Mesmers were one of the more sloggy classes due to their reliance on traits to be effective. However, due to the changes and buffs to Scepter/Torch, they can kill mobs much faster early on. Everyone will tell you to use sword and staff or greatsword if you go back to leveling. I say that info is outdated. Try scepter/torch and take the leveling gear with conditiond amage in it. You get access to lots of confusion and torment now, and confusion’s damage on mobs was buffed.

I can take on 3-5 higher level mobs on my new Mesmer if I’m in Scepter/Torch. I cast my phantasmal mage, stealth with prestige and then cast Confusing Images while stealthed.

Sword is still a decent leveling weapon, but it’s reliant on traits still. Mesmer weapon damage is weak. It’s overall damage depends on Phantasms and shattering. You don’t get the tools that buff those things until much later on. Scepter/Torch can apply condiitons that outperform the weak weapon damage of the class.

WOOT! I love Mesmer! PURPLE!
I don’t min/max with it – I just love using the Greatsword and boomeranging the blade around like a pinball game. I don’t feel like a weakling or underpowered. I didn’t feel it was hard to level her either. I tried other classes but none have kept me hooked like Mesmer.

Hawt.

Mesmers get a shield, wells, access to a  unique buff, cooldown reductions and resets, and the ultimate reset button.

That was pretty much how I felt too. Playing a Warrior or a Necro, I could take out 3 dudes in 4 seconds…When I rolled a Mesmer (Which was my 2nd character ever in GW2), I was like….nevermind…not what I expected.

So I main a Condition Necro, followed by a Meta-GS Warrior.

And I’m dying to know what Necromancers & Warriors get as Elite Specs.

TomTurtle Honestly, I don’t main a mesmer at all… it’s down there with my elem and thief as my least played. I tried because they look so cool, but it just seems like a slog compared to my other streamrolly characters. This is the kind of light-at-the-end-of-the-tunnel that might make me play one heavily. In watching this, I suddenly realized the draw of elite specs/elite classes/prestige classes/whatever in place of brand-new ones. I’ve never been convinced before.

I like the concept, and I really like shields so this is pretty exciting for me as I main a Mesmer. The description of wells, alacrity and what other few skills were detailed elsewhere sound quite powerful. Now to only spam refresh on that blog post so I can read more.

Eh… Not sure I necessarily feel it for Mesmer. It would really help if Arena Net actually had the page up and running when they make this announcement, but Time Manipulation in a literal sense? How is that exactly Mesmer territory? If it’s explained as only ‘appearing’ like it I’d definitely see it working. But controlling time literally…?
Eww…

NebHatesYou 2 Shield skills, 4 Utility skills, 1 Healing skill, 1 Elite skill. Many of those extra skills are Wells, like the Necromancer currently has, except the have an extra effect when they end. A new F5 shatter skill which temporally displaces the Chrono – when it ends, the Chrono shifts back to when the skill was first used and has the same health/skill recharge/endurance/etc as it had just as it used the skill, allowing double use of skills and a distinct time-travel feel. Finally, a unique buff is given to the Chrono called Alacrity, which speeds up skill recharge time and allows for bigger bursts of damage when coordinated with a group or phantasms.
