The Daily Grind: Do you buy the Daybreak-owns-Standing Stone Games rumor?

Buried in the Daybreak ruckus of last week was the rumor that Daybreak is not in fact merely the publisher of Standing Stone Games’ MMOs (LOTRO and DDO) – that instead it owns SSG outright. It’s probably not the first time you’ve heard the rumor, especially once it really heated up earlier this month when SSG’s Rob Ciccolini let slip that Daybreak Austin’s Jack Emmert was his “direct boss” in an interview. I have my own reasons to believe it’s true. But as they say, it’s not about what you know – it’s about what you can prove.

Daybreak declined to comment on the question of the full extent of its stake in SSG when I inquired last week; a spokesperson told me Daybreak wouldn’t comment on rumors (which is worth a chuckle since Daybreak commenting on the Russian sanction rumors is how it got into this mess). And sure, Daybreak doesn’t have to give its customers or the media a complete family tree. But given that Daybreak’s apparently been misrepresenting its own ownership for the last 3+ years, you’d think maybe they’d come clean just this once, as this isn’t a good look – which is why MMORPG players have dug up the bit about how a Daybreak VP appears to be an SSG director.

What do you think – do you buy the rumor that Daybreak owns Standing Stone Games, in full or in part? And if so, why do you think they’ve both been presenting it as nothing more than a publisher/developer relationship since the Turbine split?

Special thanks to Yrys on this one!

from cnn:
Special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigators have questioned a Russian oligarch about hundreds of thousands of dollars in payments his company’s US affiliate made to President Donald Trump’s personal attorney, Michael Cohen, after the election, according to a source familiar with the matter.
Viktor Vekselberg, chairman of asset manager Renova Group, is an oligarch close to Vladimir Putin,

-SSG claims some random relationship with DBG
– DBG claims to not be part of Columbus Nova
– Columbus Nova claims to not be part of Renova

All right after the massive layoffs which followed the 2 billion dollar asset freeze and winding down operations order from the US gov’t- not to mention the “what if’s” of a mafia money laundering investigation if that were to happen. ( Krono, TP’s)

I can see why some feel it might be a “downstream affiliation” and considered an “asset” of Renova/CN. The truth will out soon enough.

I believe the guy that correctly identified his boss. In my experience, people can clearly identify who their boss is at work.

Even though I only see him at most twice a year, I could still pick him out of a lineup.

I’d guess probably. After all, shady lies and doublespeak is nothing new to anything related to daybreak and the companies theyve definitely never been affiliated with.

I would be shocked and disappointed to learn SSG was owned by Daybreak. They’ve never publicly treated it as anything other than a producer/developer relationship and, honestly, gamers haven’t really benefited from that hypothetical ownership. LOTRO isn’t a part of the All Access Pass, Daybreak doesn’t really advertise it, we don’t see the same pricing structures/tiers.

SSG have said Daybreak pretty much hosts the game and provides support (likely in exchange for a cut of the profits), but beyond that it’s all SSG. And can you look at the Mordor promotional material and think it had an experienced advertising team behind it?

All that to say, I guess there’s a chance, but from everything I’ve seen from SSG there doesn’t seem to be anyone bankrolling them. Most of their decisions have seemed like the utilitarian kind an independent company would make, but that’s all just my perspective. Basically, if there is a parent company, we haven’t seen any real benefit from it so far.

Nothing Daybreak has released since they became Daybreak is covered by All Access either, so it’s not surprising they wouldn’t add it to these games if they took over the company.

My money is on “partner” … Meaning that ownership isn’t absolute (doubt WB completely gave up the reins, and there may be others too) but they do own part of the company & are directly managing them as a subsidiary.

Yep, if I was asked to put down money on a bet, I’d put my money down that Daybreak owns SSG. Which of course makes me twitchy and uncomfortable.

Haven’t put any thought against it since I don’t much care but I wouldn’t be surprised, especially with the recent shenanigans, if they did.

Neither company seems to be terribly forthright about what the situation is from what I recall/have seen, which is generally not a great sign to begin with.

Also – Today seems like another bomb-shell day. I’m anxiously awaiting another completely unexpected headline to hit regarding this saga.

I’ve no idea what’s happening with LoTRO, it’s been a mystery to me ever since the removal of the European localisation from Codemasters.

That said, I continue to play it from time to time with a couple of lifetime accounts that I’ve never regretted buying at launch.

At least things are more open and transparent with Elder Scrolls Online. If Zenimax was put up for sale we’d see it listed in the Crown Store ;)!
