EVE Fanfest 2015 begins, promises new VR tech and huge EVE reveal

It’s the time of year again when EVE Online fans and developers from around the world make the annual pilgrimage to a frozen volcanic rock at the top of the world for the EVE Online Fanfest. Over 1200 people are in attendance at this year’s event, and the key talks are all being streamed live in HD for free via Twitch TV. I’m also here on the floor at the event to bring you all the latest from the EVE universe and visit some of the talks and roundtables that won’t be streamed.

The focus of EVE Fanfest 2015 will be squarely on players, with all the reveals and announcements packed into the EVE Keynote later today to give the most time possible for roundtable discussions and feedback sessions. CCP has promised less talk about visions for EVE‘s future and more on things it can promise to deliver, with “less hype and more substance.” We’ll see some shiny new graphics, results of the overhauled new player experience testing, and info on upcoming balance changes and the sovereignty revamp. We’re also promised a ton of interesting stats on EVE and a big feature reveal that players should go crazy over.

A significant focus has been placed on VR tech for this year’s event, with a live demo of EVE: Valkyrie on the new Crescent Bay Oculus Rift and several new VR tech demos on both the Rift and Samsung’s Gear VR. Since Valkyrie came out of nowhere as a side project, CCP has now given two small teams in Atlanta and Shanghai carte blanche to just play around with VR tech and see what they can do. Those of you hoping to hear more about Project Legion will be disappointed as it’s not ready to show, but CCP says it believes that DUST 514 is now in the best state it has ever been in.

Massively Overpowered is on the ground in Reykjavik, Iceland, for EVE Fanfest 2015, bringing you expert coverage from EVE, Valkyrie, DUST, and everything else CCP has up its sleeve!
Disclosure notice: In accordance with Massively OP’s ethics policy, we must disclose that CCP paid for our writer’s travel and accommodation to this event and is providing the press with food and entertainment. CCP has neither requested nor been granted any control or influence over our coverage of the event. A press guy with an epic beard gave Brendan a hug, but we’re pretty sure that’s not a conflict of interest.

syberghost Nyphur Ships definitely have crews, CCP even had numbers on how many based on ship class a while back. NPC ships have a bridge and loads of crew on board, and while capsuleers ships require less crew because the pilot can directly interface with the computer, they definitely still have crew.

Nyphur syberghost people on the bridge? I KNEW IT; for years I’ve been saying the capsuleer is only the Captain, and that there are people on these ships. Other players have been telling me I’m wrong, they’re fully automated and the only human onboard is the capsuleer. Vindicated!

syberghost They actually had a VR tech demo alled “Ship Spinner” where you could spin an Algos around and stick your head in it and see all the little people on the bridge. It was awesome :D

I want to make a snarky DUST 514 comment, but it hurts my soul too much.

That’s the best disclaimer I’ve ever read…

Admittedly, I haven’t read many disclaimers.

what do mean a conflict of interest is only when you get caught. Dont get caught.
I do admit that it is nice to see actual accountability and acknowledgement in journalism. It is shame very few
mainstream media do it. Let alone a small crowd funded gig doing it. It gives me hope.

Well the press love Valk with the new Crescent Bay so who knows maybe they did knock it out of the park and that Vive will be supported as well.

Cant wait for a few more months when it launches. It wont be cheap but it will be fun!
