Sweet, I finally remembered to login for one of these in time to get patched.
Honestly the fact that you can’t patch the game and be ready to go at any time if you’re not currently subbed is probably literally the single biggest reason I haven’t subbed back anytime recently.  Not all of us are on fancy pants fiber optic Japanese internet, Squeenix, please throw a bone to the players who can’t download faster than 300kb/s and just let me patch in my own time.

Phubarrh Wratts Rohirrim I feel exactly the say. I really want to love FF14, but the grind can be soul destroying. I started playing about a month before Heavenswards launch and had a blast getting my character to 60, even though I did find that there wasn’t enough quests in the expac content to get me to 60 and had to grind some of the way between 50 and 60.

But one of the premises I loved about FF14 was that you could do all the jobs on one character and one I set out to try and get my White Mage to 60 I found my interest in the game deminsihing fast, and by the time she reached 55ish I was ready to unsub.

For me the idea suggested above, regarding giving us the option to repeat the quests with the exp reward, but no other rewards, is a good one. I am always an altoholic in any game I play so having to repeat the quests wouldn’t cause me a problem. I just hate grinding.

I realise that different games are suited/aimed at different people ad their play styles and FF14 may simply be not suited to mine, sadly.

Enikuo bakkahentai2600 Krem Ppiper  No, we got two new dungeons that patch. They just weren’t part of the main story. People didn’t like it.

Both games brings a lot of amazing attributes to their CC’s, IMO. You can be lost for hours building your toon. As well as they’re not without their issues. Such as character options seem a bit too stiff and refined in XIV. Where as B&S don’t mind their clippings. In the end though, your still able to create works of art…which far more than one can say for WoW.

DugFromTheEarth bakkahentai2600 New class.
Source: I started a new character after Heavensward launched. The flow, including experience and gear handed out post-50 to get through dungeon content along the way is significantly faster than at launch, and the new 30% xp ring you can get at 15 (works to 30, even on your first class) will contribute to that even more than what I experienced.

bakkahentai2600 Enikuo Krem Ppiper Did they just not add dungeons? I can see people being upset about that, but that’s not the same as not making dungeons a requirement.
They already allow high-level players to run low-level players through dungeons to get through the story and now they’re making story stuff solo? That actually makes me pretty hopeful.

I didn’t find the level grind that bad. What I did find tedious was the need to do all the mai. Story to even get to the xpac stuff. I see why it needs to be done, it’s just an unfortunate barrier so I was excited to get to the new stuff once I hit 50.

An alt, or a new class?

If you already have a 60 in one class, leveling another grants a pretty heft XP bonus.

My definition of fun is doing hand crafted quests that link to a story that is more than just “My sister forgot her necklace, go to her house and then deliver it to her for me!”

Easily half the side quests in this game is a multi stage fedex quests (go to npc1, get item, take item to NPC2, then go to NPC3, who tells you go back to NPC1 again). Most of the time these back and forth quests require you to go vast distances, not just to places within the same zone. Sure, you can teleport (yay money sink) but this just adds more time to the grind and duration it takes to complete them.

The kill quests make up the other half of the quests, and they are nearly as bad. (go to npc1, who tells you to kill X amount of a specific creature. Return to NPC1 when done, who then tells you to talk to NPC2 about the things you killed. They then tell you to go back to where you were killing the specific creature, to do another task that you could have done the first time you were there, return back to npc2, who then tells you to go back to NPC1 to finish the quest.)

So much of the back and forth between NPCs in this game could have been reduced, but its clear that the intention was to take up the players time, to make the content seem lengthy. Imagine if you had to be an interpreter between to people, but these 2 people lived across town from each other, and both refused to leave the house.

Then there are the core elements of the game that are hidden behind side missions that the game doesnt tell you where or how to unlock them. You just need to make sure you talk to every quest givern so you dont miss something that might be important. Dungeons, for instance, are all unlocked by first doing a short side mission quest (except for the couple linked to the main story). If you dont ever happen to visit the town where that npc is, you wont ever gain access to the dungeon. The same is true for things like using material, elements of forging/crafting, dying your outfits, etc etc.

There are 2 ways a game can get a player to spend lots of time (weeks, months, years even) playing a game. 1. Make the game fun, so the player wants to keep playing. Or, 2. Gate content, add lots of intentional time wasting content designed to make the player spend excess time doing, so they have to stay subbed longer to complete it.  FFXIV has some of #1, mostly in the way of the main story content and dungeons… but the majority of the games lower level content fits #2.

Most of my friends in the game who are 60, have played since release, and most have forgotten how much of of a grind the game was. Most even figured that Id be in heavensward nearly as soon as I reached 50, forgetting that you still have to play through over a years worth or patched in content first as well. (at least if I could get to 50, it would mostly be only story content at that point… but even at 48, ive pretty much lost the incentive to play.)

DugFromTheEarth bakkahentai2600  That’s ridiculous. I just levelled an alt. You have to grind like three times while doing the story.

And, “a bit of fun”? What exactly do you define as fun?
