Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2016 awards continue today with our award for Most Anticipated MMORPG for 2017 and Beyond, which was awarded to Star Citizen last year in an incredibly close vote. This year’s was close too, but dang, a lot of the games are the same because they still aren’t out.
Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end!
The Massively OP staff pick for Most Anticipated MMORPG for 2017 and Beyond is…
Andrew Ross (@dengarsw):Â Crowfall. It’s the one I most expect to release this year, and I’m curious about how their semi-permanent gameworld model’s going to work.
Brendan Drain (@nyphur):Â Star Citizen. It’s hard to argue that anything has built up more anticipation than Star Citizen in 2016 when the game has now raised a total of over $138 million US in crowdfunding and pre-sales to nearly 1.7 million separate people. Crowdfunding continued unchallenged even when they stopped adding stretch goals at the end of 2014, and this year it seems to have exceeded all expectations. For better or for worse, a lot of eyes are going to remain on Star Citizen until it launches.
Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Camelot Unchained. I respect the hell out of the studio behind it, and I cannot wait to see what a sub-based, no-PvE, crafting-centric, RvR sandbox looks like in the modern age. Runners-up for me: New World, Project Gorgon, the mystery Guild Wars 2 expansion, Crowfall, and Star Citizen.
Eliot Lefebvre (@Eliot_Lefebvre, blog): Peria Chronicles. I realize that this is one of those things that’s more than likely to disappoint me, and that’s assuming it ever even does get localized (far from a sure thing). But oh, if it delivered, how wonderful it would be.
Justin Olivetti (@Sypster, blog):Â Project Gorgon. If Santa is listening, all I want for Christmas is for Project Gorgon to get some better art assets and release already. I can’t wait to explore this world and its crazy skill systems! Runner-up: Sea of Thieves. MMO or no, this oozes personality and charm.
Larry Everett (@Shaddoe, blog): I’m still looking forward to Crowfall. I’m a bit turned off by the amount of PvP involved, but the overall concept still intrigues me. Hopefully, I can get myself hooked up with a good guild or group of people who can carry me a bit when the game launches. Regardless, I will be there on day one.
MJ Guthrie (@MJ_Guthrie, blog):Â I am still giving this to Star Citizen. I don’t know when it will actually fully launch, but there is so much to it making it such a deep universe that I can’t wait to see when it all fully comes together. My runner up goes to Shroud of the Avatar. I am really looking forward to running my own inn! I’m dying for another game I can have meaningful play in without resorting to combat.
Tina Lauro Pollock (@purpletinabeans): Star Citizen gets in again in my book…how can it not with so much financial support piled into the project to demonstrate how eagerly anticipated it really is? Man, I would really hate to be a part of that development team… that amount of cash and the near-cultish following gained by the title would be so overwhelming.
