Marvel Heroes is removing a la carte costumes and making lockboxes easier to get on consoles

dress out.

If you’re playing Marvel Heroes on console and were hoping for a change in how the game handles lockboxes and individual costumes, the good news is that a change is coming. The bad news, though, is what sort of change is coming. On June 30th, all individual costumes for characters will no longer be available for purchase; instead, they’ll all be part of a rotating set of costumes available within lockboxes, with a chunk of boxes being awarded automatically at certain leveling milestones.

Players are not particularly happy about this change as a whole, since it addresses the problem of “some costumes are only available by random chance” by making all costumes random. A developer response assures players that there will be other means to acquire lockboxes through gameplay, but that doesn’t address the central complaint about removing any control over costume rewards. The developers have also stated that the previous a la carte model simply wasn’t sustainable in the longer term, but that alone is unlikely to mollify players.

Um there’s an issue here that’s bigger than just how your character looks – a lot of costumes are used to pick your character’s gender for a large number of characters. It was already bad enough for female players that we had to buy both the character and then the female costume to play certain female characters (female versions of Deadpool, Spiderman, Thor, Loki, Ghost Rider, Captain America, Black Panther, Hawkeye, Punisher, and then some male to female ones too I don’t know of because I don’t play male heroes). For female players that want to play female heroes, changing these to rotating or lock boxes only is horrible.

As mentioned, it already was a kick in the butt to have to buy both the hero and the costume to be the gender we wanted, now it’s more like a kick to the butt with a spiked shoe.

They should keep selling the gender swap costumes straight out…

Oh, this is not good.

Smell that, friends? That’s the smell of Gazillion burning piles of player goodwill they’d previously earned with Marvel Heroes.

Pro-tip: Never offer your customers something good and then snatch it back. They’ll remember longer than you expect.

Customers who think you’re scamming them are even less “sustainable”. They go spend their money on one of the many other games available to them out there.

Good grief….i do hope they have zero plans to bring this to the PC side of things….and id hate to be them if they do decide to bring it to PC. Ive spent a LOT of money on this game over the years….more then i care to think about…if this does decide to slither over to PC that’ll be the end of that…

So the only dealings with lockboxes I’ve ever had was when the game would give you the lockbox but you had to buy the key, which is why they where called lockboxes in the first place. Is that not how it’s done anymore? I mean if you have the box you can just open it?

Also a business model where giving people what they paid for isn’t sustainable really?!?!?!
The only time that argument is valid is when you are talking about gambling.

If players receive a duplicate costume within a loot box, they will receive a set amount of Marvelous Essence in place of that costume.

And you can get duplicates of costumes you already own.

Just wait for Path of Exile to make it to your console. GGG will, presumably, treat console players with some respect. The Marvel license isn’t worth putting up with this.

A year or two ago I would have said the same thing about Gaz. I hope you’re right about PoE, though.

yeah, im pretty much done with this game, and this company.

I dont regret the money i spent over the years, because it did provide me with entertainment, however, the current mindset of things is just going in the complete opposite direction that I care to take part in, or support any more with my wallet.

It seems like since Brevik left they’re fully on the let’s do our best to milk players dry. As someone who spent hundreds of dollars prior to that, I don’t regret it, but it’s sad that many of the people who made that game so much fun have now left and seem to be replaced by bean counters who develop things in a manner solely to get people to part with money.
