Villagers and Heroes slams RuneScape over ‘first-ever cross-platform MMO’ claims

Buckle up, MMO fans, because it’s about to get really weird up in here. There seems to be this strange struggle between studios these days to claim the title of “first-ever cross-platform MMO” (at least for a western title). Last week, RuneScape announced that it was going to be the first game to do this with its upcoming mobile edition, but now Villagers and Heroes — which offers the game on both PC and Android — is contesting that claim.

“Competitor announces ‘1st MMO on mobile, first to deliver interoperable play between PC and mobile’ for 2018… SORRY, WRONG. We did it first!” Mad Otter Games tweeted last week. “Villagers and Heroes IS the first and the BEST mainstream and established Western MMO offering full cross-platform play!”

Of course, AdventureQuest 3D would like to have a word with both of you, as would Pixel Worlds, Pocket Legends, Nebula Online, Arcane Legends, and some game that launched this past week. Forget its name. Albion something? “First cross-platform MMO” doesn’t really seem to be a label that can be exclusively claimed these days (as we’ll talk about on the MOP Podcast later today!).

In any case, Villagers and Heroes is preparing for its massive Starfall expansion/overhaul for this year and dropped some information about the loot revamp and some of the new quests that players will be enjoying.

I haven’t fully researched all the games you mention but I think Villagers and Heroes where saying they beat Runescapes claim that they where going to be the first mmorpg that was cross platform on both mobile and PC. natively offering the chance to play the same game on both. they released their mobile version in October of last year so that would predate some of the mentioned games and others you mentioned don’t seem to have a PC version so I am not sure what you are trying to say with the list of games you say would like to vie for the title…

This shows you just how blind these guys are to their competition and what else has been going on (especially on mobile). You guys are only listing the most known MMORPGs, there are even more than that that have been cross platform some time already and many are Western games. This ship has sailed so long ago, to have these two fight for the title now is supremely ridiculous. That they go ahead and put this false information up that they’re the first and confuse people who years down the line will be quoting them and saying they were the first (not knowing any better) is also irksome.

Man, maybe it’s just the news lately, but those sure read like some Trump-esque tweets, I was half expecting them to end with, “SAD!”

Either way, this is a poor hill for them to choose to have their pissing match on. They’re way behind from being “first”, themselves. Don’t get bogged down on who did it “first”, give a crap about who does it best. If your game is better, and offers better cross-platform experience, pimp that shit.

Villagers and Heroes was the first mmo I played on my PC that felt like I was playing on my phone with just one bar.

It shouldn’t be about who was first, that ship has sailed.

Instead, we should be asking why ALL games aren’t cross-platform. It should be how things are. BYOD. Play. From anywhere. Anytime. I’ll put my signature on such a gamers’ bill of rights.

because andriod/iphone mmo sucks and actually dumbs down the mmo. take for example albion dumbed down game so it could run on android.

That was a really well-thought-out, empirically supported, lucid refutation. /s You’re completely ignoring the rapid development cycle of both iOS/Android, and the hardware it runs on. We now have octa-core processors, gigabytes of RAM, and graphic chips capable of VR in our mobile devices. You’re thinking in 2007 terms. I’m thinking of what is, and what will be.

All on an itty-bitty screen. No thank you.

Do you want to carry around the peripherals that would make this approach feasible?

The guts of the phones aren’t as big a concern – how you input your directions/interact with the game, on the other hand, is significantly more limited.

Even something as simple as an FPS feels iffy using current input controls on the phone itself without additional hardware.

Am I the only person who’s ever used a mobile gamepad? They have everything a console player gets, and a bar to dock your phone. Which, by the way, is 1440p resolution. I play quite well on that setup. Honestly, I feel like the nay-sayers have never even tried this stuff. They just “meh” as a kneejerk reaction.

yes the hardware can run it but the games need to get dumb down due to size of screen and inputs so that it’s not overly complicated to use so that devices can use them. Also they have to slow down gameplay enough so that user can react quickly enough because their input device is limited (even worse than console)

Hell look at mmo being developed for PC and then ported to console. Developer touts a major redesign of the app to make it more fun, but really what they doing is dumbing it down to allow porting to console. Case and point: Marvel Heroes, Skyforge (That one was a slap in the face but ya that’s another story).

Your a charming game V&H but stop. Runescape is far and away more popular and unless you have something up your sleeve as ammo, I wouldn’t go picking a bone with Runescape over silly claims.

And they have been pimping that so called update forever without any proof as to how its going. Its just all talk.

I love the ambition, but Villagers and Heroes is not mainstream.

Talk about moving the goalposts. The definition of “platform” will have the goalposts running around like the free safety in a 3-4 zone blitz defense.

Couldn’t any MMO that runs on Mac and Windows be considered “cross-platform”?

Oh, this could get technical.. Some would argue that Mac/PC use the same hardware configuration. Socketed processor, slotted ram, graphics port video card, etc. They only differ in operating systems so no, same platform.

So if I run Linux, Androidx86 or Remix OS on my PC, then, same platform. By that measure, all games should natively run, no matter what the OS. Funny that devs don’t see it that way.

“They only differ in operating systems so no, same platform.”

Speaking as a veteran software developer… Oh, hell no.

Just figuring out which OS framework and language to use on Windows is an adventure. Neither Win32 nor .NET bear any resemblance to Cocoa or POSIX. And graphics APIs are where everybody tries to screw their neighbors. DirectX is Microsoft-only, and while they’re OK with OpenGL and Vulkan on desktop, they won’t support any competing APIs on Xbox. Playstation is off in its own little world. Android is moving from OpenGL to Vulkan. Apple doesn’t want porting from iOS to Android to be easy, so they’ve gone Metal or bust, even on desktop. OpenGL in macOS hasn’t been updated in years, and Vulkan is right out.

This is why game engine development is such a big deal. Using Unreal, Unity, Frostbite, et al allows game studios to abstract out the OS and graphics API nonsense.

I have seen examples of FFXI running natively on tablets circa 2014, I am sure that if you put the effort in you could find earlier examples with other mmos. Of course non of these are officially supported platforms at least as far as tablets go, though obviously FFXI had the whole pc / console cross platform thing going for it way before any of this.

These two just look like those folks who will post first after a news post or something and look just as silly imo.

Right!? Was thinking about old ff11, standing there arms crossed, with a look of haughty derision on its face as the kids slap fight, screaming “first!”
