Betawatch: Guardians of Ember enters open beta again for the first time

Let's do the time warp again.

Hey, neat, Guardians of Ember is in open beta! Wait, didn’t that already happen? Well, yes, but that was before Insel Games managed to get itself tossed off of Steam rowdy-drunk-style for review manipulation. Now it’s back with a new open beta under Gameforge, a new localization, and hopefully much less review manipulation leading to being tugged off a storefront. Hooray!

Other beta news ensues:

Speaking of colors? Blue. That’s the color of betas because I just said that. We’ve got a whole list of games in beta and other test phases just below; chime in down in the comments if something switched test stages without us noticing!

As always, we consider an MMO to be in open testing if it features free, public signups and will server wipe prior to launch. An MMO is marked in closed testing if it’s running a private test phase that cannot freely be accessed by the general public; it’s usually under NDA as well. Early access and crowdfunded MMOs whose tests we deem legitimate will be included. So-called “open beta” soft-launch MMOs with cash shops, no sign of launch in the west, or limited interest for our readers will not be listed; we also do not list expansions, with occasional exceptions.

Having fun in Guardians of Ember today. It has that distinctly ‘Asian MMO’ look (Dodam fonts and all), but the soul of a Westerner, stuffed with different systems and mechanics.

The costume/vanity armour system, for example, is really interesting in how you convert regular armor drops into ‘skins’ for your existing armor.

There are also something like playing cards that you can pick up and collect — for what purposes I don’t know, but it seems like there might be some kind of in-game CCG going on there!

It’s good, one-handed Grim Diablo of Exile fun so far, with a smattering of Neverwinter-style LMB/RMB primary/secondary attack skills. Plus, the character creator is really good (even if the Dwarves are resolutely male with weird, glued-on heads). Definitely worth the 7 Gb download (so far!)
